I agree with the toews comparison in a lot ways. Obviously that's a best case scenerio... But I remember watching a lot of toews in his rookie season and l saw a lot of similar qualities. It was around this time of year that toews started being a little more creative and confident with the puck in his rookie season and we're already seeing that with Monahan too. That gorgeous move he made to the middle of the ice in that game against LA was an example of that.

Hmm yah Bergeron I can see and that would be great for him to develop into one of the top two-way forwards in the NHL and I could see it as most likely of the others listed as he's an intelligent player already.
I don't think he has the speed or scoring ability as Marleau or Eric Staal though.
I think Monahan tops out as a regular 25 goal scorer year after year with a few 30-35 goal seasons sprinkled in.

Just my opinion but Toews is a huge stretch. As another poster mentioned, don't see Monahan with the same hands.

I believe in an interview, Monahan said he models his game after Eric Staal. A lot of people have just liked to compare Monahan to Toews.

As I and someone else said in this thread, the way he bangs in goals from in close reminds me of Phil Esposito. It's too early to pigeon hole him though, for as he gets older he'll probably increase his play making skills.

Monahan isn't as offensively dynamic or fast on skates as Toews.

There isn't a 100% accurate comparison between two players. Toews is a good comparable for Monahan because of the style of play both of them show, two-way, leadership, strong middlemen.
It's appropriate.

I think it's yet to be seen whether or not Monahan is a Toews or a Langkow. Similar style of players, but I'd argue Monahan hasn't shown the "dynamic" offensive skills that Toews has. Could be looking at a more steady Langkow-like player, which is still good.

Thanks, this is basically what I was thinking of when I selected Toews as a comparable. They show similar mentality and attitude towards responsible play. I realize that Monahan doesn't have nearly the hands that Toews does, but it's his first season in the NHL after all - and once he gets some confidence with the puck and experience he'll start to get a little more creative.
Right now he's already showing that elite hockey sense that was so lauded back in the days approaching the draft, once he develops better puck-handling and confidence we'll start to see some great vision plays from Moneyhands. We're already seeing his incredible finishing instinct.
Right now his signature move is to somehow ninja into the slot out of nowhere and undetected, and either receive a pass or swat at a loose puck and it ends up in the net.

I think we need to stop comparing Monahan to other players. Hes his own player which is a good thing. Pretty soon junior players will be compared to Monahan.

I think both are correct. With Langkow being the lower end of his development path. However, I think he has Toews like potential

I think you're splitting hairs over the actual talent level Monahan is going to reach. When picking a comparable, it's not that he has to turn into that player, I think most people just see it as a comparable in playing style.
Toews is a good comparable, so is Langkow, so is Bergeron. Why? Because they're all pretty much the exact same TYPE of player.

What?
He's on pace for 25 this year as a 19 year old (28 if you go by games played)

I can't wait until he has a proper supporting cast surrounding him. The kid is clutch & a deadly goal scorer.
