Edmonton should pass us, but they may not. Buffalo is so far behind at this point that I don't see it happening unless we go on a prolonged period of suck, but with Hartley at the helm we'll pick off wins here and there. Buffalo is also likely to shed a few more veteran assets (Moulson, Miller) and could actually be worse than they are now by the end of the year.
I see the bottom 4 shaking out as:
1. Buffalo
2. Calgary
3. Florida
4. Edmonton

I hope that's right, but man, have you even been watching the oilers over the last 5-6 years? They get the scent of a prospect they like that could possibly wind up 1st overall, and well, the term "Full Oiler" was created for a reason. I don't see a real push to get better, and I doubt they finish higher than us.

Yeah, and they still look atrocious systems-wise, but they're earnestly trying to be better. That should mean picking up some assets at the deadline with a view to getting better, and should pick up enough "garbage time" wins after the deadline to pass us.

Believe me I hope you're right. I also hope they draft Nylander whilst picking 3rd or 4th.

If they didn't tank to get Jones I can't see them trying that hard to get Ekblad. I just think they are actually this terrible.

I've seen comments that Reinhart doesn't have a lot of fire in the belly. Having watched his dad play in the NHL, it doesn't surprise me. Paul Reinhart was one of the smartest and most skilled defencemen in the league, but when things got rough he wilted.

Oh, they tanked. If you remember, they were just a couple points out of 8th in the last couple months (someone can confirm, they actually might have been in 8th for a day or two). After losing a few in a row, they went into full tank mode and we actually behind the Flames in the standings not too much later.

I thought Edmonton was doing horrible and then went on a bit of a hot streak at the end, no? Maybe I am confusing them with another, less awful team, but that's what I thought happened.

Wish I had some sort of chart of their position. From what I remember (quite vividly) they were pretty bad most of the year, turned it on just before trade deadline to get close to/into the playoff picture. Lose a few, full tank. Then yes, they won a couple games to close out the year ahead of Calgary.

That last part is right... they won their last two games and finished three points up on the Flames (Flames lost their last 3).
Here's a site where you can find the standings by day in a season: http://www.shrpsports.com/nhl/stand.htm\
Looks like they were in 8th at the trade deadline (Ahead of St.Louis!!) - April 3 2013, they also beat Calgary 8-2 on that day, scoring 8 unanswered after the Flames were up 2-0 http://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/en/boxscore?id=2012020540. Peak Oilers.

Pretty sure I know the answer to this and that is no they can't trade this pick but, the question is Could the New Jersey Devils say trade to us their first round pick which they are to forfeit, and we let's say provide them with Mr. Fill In Name.
As well if New Jersey is to forfeit and can't trade the pick how do the percentages get skewed for the lottery?

The NHL won't let any team use the pick to select anyone, so I see no advantage for any team to trade for it.
Lottery percentages technically don't get skewed. If New Jersey wins the lottery, the 1st overall pick will be forfeit, and the first player to be picked by the next team will be officially known as the 2nd overall pick.
If the lottery were to happen today New Jersey only has a 4.7% chance to win it. So I suppose there is an extra 4.7% chance all the other teams below New Jersey they won't move down one spot.

Man that would kind of sting for the poor 18 year old kid being Ekblad, Reinhart or Bennett, but would be an awesome trivia question in 2023.
Thanks for the information though I do appreciate it.

After the 4 game win streak, we're now more likely to finish 4th last, or even 5th.
Assuming 4th, I believe our draft odds are:
1st - 10.7%
4th - 58%
5th - 31.3%
Time to start looking at the top 6 guys being drafted this year.
Personal ranking:
Reinhart
Ekblad
Bennett
Draisaitl
Dal Colle
Fleury
Perlini

Yep. Flames will draft 3 or 4 would be my guess as I don't see this winning trend continuing. At the same time, Buffalo and Edmonton will not pass us.

Don't look now but we are tied with Florida and one back of NYI with a couple of games in hand. Live the hot streak but there are consequences...

Draft Lottery odds be damned... The flames keep playing hard every night like they have and the hockey gods will reward them some how. Maybe win the lottery despite finishing 25th or better. Maybe whoever they pick at whatever position they pick turns out to be the best player in this draft and was simply underestimated by scouts... It's happened many times before.

At least Draisaitl and Dal Colle are not far off Reinhart/Bennett skill wise.

Maybe it will be like last year's draft and for some reason Ekblad will get passed over multiple times and fall right into our laps!

This is very possible. And it could be a blessing. In some ways, Monahan fell into our laps as well (would we have taken him had we finished a position or two higher in the draft?) and that is turning out just fine so far.

There's 27 games left.
There's gonna be lots of jockeying back and forth between Florida, Calgary, NY, and possibly Edmonton if they can get they're #### together once in a while.
Picking anywhere from 2nd - 5th is obviously where we'll be which will still give us a good player. Other than Ekblad, I don't feel there's any player that stands out over the rest anyway. It's a win-win deal in that range. Higher just means we're working hard and trying to stay away from the loser mentality that... *ahem* some teams can't shake.
I'll take either these days.
