Does anyone know if there is motorcycle parking at the airport? I got nothing going on, and thought it would be interesting to check things out.

Say hello, if you're in attendance. I'll be sporting a wheelchair, perhaps a Flames jersey, name is Patrick.

Yup, I got the invite today too.

No invites for me, but I wouldn't be available at the time if they are all for Wednesday morning. I saw the sign for where you are supposed to meet though, when I was at the airport for a photo shoot yesterday. (My dog works at the airport.)

Hainan Airlines is reducing the Beijing-Calgary flight down to 2x weekly for the winter 16/17 season, except it will be 3x weekly in January.

Not great to see a brand new route that was supposed to actually increase (as per original plans) get cut back already.

The cost of Hainan pretty much priced them right out of the market. I can do YYC-YVR-PEK-TAO for around $1300 CDN with Air China.
Hainan wanted close to $2k for YYC-PEK in economy.
Edit: For fun I just checked a fare for October and it's $750 return YYC-PEK
Might give them a try next month, I've never flown with them before.

So I was at the trials this morning. They gave you your travel details and documents and you just go through all the steps for departures and international arrivals/connections. I did not get to see those fancy golf cart pathways though. And to be honest the main terminal is kinda meh. I dont travel that much, but the first thing I thought of was that I was at Pearson. Overall though it was interesting trial, glad to see Calgary get a real international terminal.

As an aside, what's with the ridiculous security lines at YYC "lately". The last two times I've been there in the last year, the lines stretch all the way out of the security area to the restaurant there (montanas?)

Yes, that's what they said at the trials today.
I got to go on two "flights" at the trials. They were both to the States, so I didn't get to see the international departures area, but the new US terminal is a massive improvement over what we have now. A big food court (Burger King, a Sushi place, Spolumbo's, Thai Express, and one other place I can't remember right now), and a couple other sit-down restaurants and bars. A big Tim Hortons and Starbucks too.
There are a bunch of shops in the departure area too. The Hudson's looked like it was already fully stocked except for the magazines and food items. Those stores must just pop up fully formed inside every airport in the world.
They're doing like a lot of airports now where your gate doesn't get assigned until about 15 minutes before boarding, so most of the seating is in a central area, with very little seating at the gates.
Unfortunately, there's still quite a bit of walking from the gates to Customs, but at least there will be moving sidewalks for the far gates.
There are a lot of automated kiosks for going through Customs, then just a quick check of your information as you leave. That should speed things up quite a bit. I had a hell of a time using the passport scanners, but hopefully that was because of the stuff they gave us and they'll work better with real passports.
They're still doing a lot of finishing work, but the terminal is bright and open and easy to get around.

You're probably travelling at busy times. I volunteer there each week and some times are really busy, some are not. I heard Friday nights are bad for Westjet and international flights that use Concourse A. I usually volunteer on Saturdays, but the one time I did Friday early evening, the security line-up was like that.

Interesting to hear the updates from the people who went! I've been volunteering at the airport since April and I figure I will finally have the "old" area figured out right about the time the new area opens.

Are there automated kiosks for Canadian immigration? I can't stand the third degree interrogation I always receive when returning home.

I have not been through any airports like this so maybe my perception is wrong, but I really don't like this concept at all.

It won't be to hard for someone to figure out what gate their plane will be at ahead of that call to gate announcement. Easy ones will be if you're flying international, there's only going to be:
-one big blue plane at a gate (KLM)
-one British Airways (LHR)
-one Hainan (PEK)
-two Air Canada wide bodies (LHR & FRA)
-one Air Canada wide body (NRT)
-one WestJet 767 (LGW)
It may be trickier with narrowbody flights on WestJet and Air Canada to the US and international though. American carriers may be easier too, but early morning departures when there are multiple United birds on the ground could make it tricky.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do when you volunteer there?

True. It's the lack of seating at the individual gates that I think I dislike.
