In reality the Flames got super lucky too...injuries forced Sutter to go get a goalie and he happened to get Kipper who he was familiar with from San Jose.
If Turek and Mclennan dont both get hurt we look back at Sutter's time as GM and that whole era of Flames hockey a lot differently

And if I recall, the story was he wanted Toskala initially.

Nilson, Niemenen, and Simon all played major roles in the playoff run - all were deadline acquisitions.
Warrener was brought in the summer of 2003.
2/3 of the 2nd line, a 2nd pair D, and the best goalie in franchise history, in one season.
As for the 14/15 Flames - the stars up front were Johnny, Monahan and Hudler (all Feaster guys), but the heavy lifting all year was done by Backlund, Brodie and Gio. Even Glencross had 28 points in 53 games for us that year - another Darryl signing that I forgot.
Darryl kept Iggy and Kipper in town twice through their primes.
He was a good GM for a period, and then his team’s window closed. And then things went off the rails.
It is what it is.

Yeah, I hear you.
He probably closed the window a little faster but making the team older post 2004/2005 Lockout. But hindsight is 20/20. At the time it felt like a new era where the Flames the Oilers could acquire players Amonte or Pronger etc.

Jarome had two of his best years under Keenan, I don’t think he would’ve been screaming for change (unless Keenan’s actions vs Chicago were too much).
But that Chicago series if I recall wasn’t really on Iron Mike - no Regehr, Phaneuf playing with a hairline fracture in his hip (eventually knocked out of the series with a concussion), no Bourque, no Gio, chemistry issues with Jokinen and Iggy/Cammalleri, and Kiprusoff didn’t have a banner year.

Yeah, the injuries. I think I may remember Warrener alluding to something between Iggy and Mike on Barn Burner a few months ago. But I could be misremembering.

I think were Sutter failed as a GM was managing the cap. Which is getting harder every year it seems.

Not really a good idea, no. I’d like to see it more for the entertainment value really.

Injuries derailed that season but Mike Keenan had that team in shambles to start the season and a mid season change in systems get us in.
We also went into the playoff with a historic low power play I think 0/40 and when asked about it he said he doesn't practice it.
Keenan was a terrible hire and there is a reason he has never seen a job again in the NHL.
Read Burkes book and he confirms that Keenan is one of the worst coaches ever who just plays mind games.

Keenan worked with Sutter in Chicago, who hired Keenan.
All other things aside, I don't think a coach who worked under one of the worst coaches ever would hire that same coach if that Stanley Cup winning coach wasn't good at his job.

Keenan literally had no system, his practices were the same handful of cookie cutter drills from junior hockey and didn't deviate them from at all.
He refused to practice the PP, even when Burke told him to practice it he was like "management told us we should" and practices it for like a minute then goes back to his bullcrap cookie cutter junior drills.
Keenan's system was run his stupid drills and scream a lot.

Sutter didn't make any good coaching hires now did he?
Even the media who went to watch practice left baffled seeing 5 on 0 drills that accomplish nothing.
The only thing Keenan was good at was bench management, everything else he sucked.
He literally said in New York I let the players figure out how to run the PP they didn't' run any drills.

Think Kipper had more to do with Keenan getting let go. When asked if he was happier with the new coach, Kipper was positively beeming and said "yeah I'm happier" (paraphrasing)

Keenan bashed him on TSN said he was the reason we didn't win a cup.
Everyone knew that Keenan not only played mind games but also was a terrible coach for goalies and when you have the cream of the crop in Kipper you don't bring in a Mike Keenan.
Honestly if Sutter is brought in as GM that would be it for me. He left us in tatters and went on his merry way to LA and won 2 cups.

The first half of his GM tenure was very competent for the most part. It's the 2nd half of his tenure where things fell apart. He lacks patience which is not an ideal in a management role and doesn't seem to handle adversity well. It seems like the worse things got for the Flames, the more he would double down and make more bad moves. We are kind of seeing that a bit in his coaching this season in that the more the team struggles the more he just keeps doing things that have not been working.

Sutter is generally a good coach and an awful GM. However I'm not even convinced he's a good coach for this team right now, if they made him GM and let Tre walk it would be a huge mistake.

I think if Treliving walks, it's not because they want Sutter as GM, but because Treliving wants to walk.

He made good trades and signed some nice contracts (both his own and free agents) in the first half.
But consistent across his tenure was absolutely terrible drafting and letting good players go for very little.
And then yeah in the second half even the things he was good at originally, he became bad at.
I'm not so dramatic to suggest that if he becomes GM again I'm done as a Flames fan. But I sure don't want it to happen.
