Not really war related and kind of random, but I just learned that there is an old Swedish community in the Kherson region. They were located there from Estonia in the 1700s by Catherine the Great and the community survives to this day. I love weird geography facts like this. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if this war is the thing that ends the community.

Russia suspending their participation in the grain deal is bad news for a lot of people. That will likely substantially add to the suffering in places where there have already been high levels of food insecurity. Prices of grains are heading back up.

Great! Russia backs off on their empty threats or they press the attack closer to the shoreline with Odessa and have more of their frigates promoted to submarines by Neptune ASMs. Either way they look even weaker than they already are.
Russia alleges that the navigation systems on the drones that attacked the Black Sea Fleet were made in Canada:
Quote:
The drones used to attack Russian ships in the Black Sea in Crimea were equipped with Canadian-made parts used in the navigation systems, according to Russia’s defence ministry.
It said 16 Ukrainian drones attacked the fleet in the Black Sea in the annexed Crimean Peninsula early on Saturday. Russia said its navy “repelled” the assault in the bay of Sevastopol.
The Russian military “conducted an examination of Canadian-made navigation modules” found in the shot-down unmanned aerial vehicles.
I, for one, hope this is true, and I would like to send them some more as these ones seem to have worked well, though are no longer in their posession.

I am of Russian decent but am disgusted to be so at this time, even though my ancestors fled Russian to Georgia for the same reason. War..
True, and the same can be said for many countries like Germany, Philippines, Italians, Vietnamese etc.
But there are a ton more Ukrainian Canadians than Russian Canadians in Western Canada and they helped shape Western Canada as we know it. Because Ukraine was attacked unprovoked, sympathy and awareness is high in these parts.

There's also the objective fact of having a large democratic nation being invaded, with the goal of annexation, by a super power. If the USA was invading Mexico, we'd have a similar, and probably much worse, sense of revulsion IMO.
If you look at the other major military conflicts, there's typically some major element of internal strife causing much of the damage.
But yes, the fact that most Canadians know people of Ukrainian descent and can place Ukraine on the map, as opposed to a place like Georgia, certainly plays a role in the reaction.
Decent summary of the political apathy in Russia and why Russian's are not protesting more strongly against the war. We see this bargain made with Pointman for example near the beginning of the conflict. Lots of similarities to the situation in China and I'm sure it will eventually play into the situation in Taiwan.

I always wanted to see St Petersberg and the Hermitage, but I will never visit that country now.
I'll visit Lviv and Kyiv when this all settles down as my personal revenge.
I always wanted to visit SPB and some other places in Russia. Now I will never set foot in that ####hole as long as I live.
Having been to Ukraine many times, Kyiv is definitely an underrated place. A true hidden gem. For me it's very easily a top 3 city in Europe. Stunning from start to finish. Kharkiv and Dnipro are pretty cool places too.
Hopefully once Russia ####s off and is contained, Ukraine will see a huge uptick in tourism. Super fun country to visit.

Russia is running out of options for blackmail after their oil debacle that backfired pretty significantly... but grain exports is one that simply cannot be impeded due to world food supply implications and the one that Russia is not about to give up on.
They have already purposely attacked a grey area within hours of the joint Turkey / UN / Ukraine announcement and attacked ships involved with the grain deal (but not part of the convoy). Putin is clearly testing the waters and has announced the movement of ships as unacceptable.
NATO will get dragged into this eventually no matter how cautious it has been, it's just a matter of time.
Putin is goading a reaction to finally get his real NATO war, but one that he can claim was provoked by NATO itself and has already claimed that this route was used as part of 'terrorist strikes' on Crimea. Clear signs of desperation are emerging after the attack on Black Sea ships that was supposed to be well defended.
Still a lot must be said of Erdogan giving the middle finger to Putin. An enemy of an enemy is my friend has never been more true.

Also of note is that in the latest hissy fit from Putin and missile assault against civilian targets after his precious fleet got attacked, one of the missiles landed in Moldova.
It's not the time that missiles crossed Moldova airspace but the first time one landed in their territory.
While it will be a non-event, it's most certainly a sign of the increasing rashness and incoherence from Putin as they take larger and larger risks.
