Sutter the GM acquired:
Kiprusoff for a 2nd
Langkow for Gauthier and Saprykin
Huselius for a song
Tanguay for Leopold
Bourque for a 2nd
Cammalleri for a swap of 1sts + Tanguay to MTL
Jokinen for Lombardi, Prust and a 1st
Notable draftees/UDFAs:
Phaneuf at 9th overall
Giordano for free
Brodie in the 4th
Backlund in the low 20s
Notable extensions:
Iginla - 3Y/$21M, 5Y/$35M
Kiprusoff - 3Y/$10M, 6Y/$35M
Phaneuf - 6Y/$39M
Langkow - 4Y/$18M
Regehr - 5Y/$20M
Sutter’s biggest failures as GM, to my mind:
1. Failing to acquire Joe Thornton from Boston. Rumor was he offered Leopold, the Bruins asked for Regehr, and Sutter hung up. He should’ve put Dion on the table.
2. Not trading enough 1st round picks. This may seem counterintuitive, but Darryl drafted Matt Pelech, Leland Irving, Kris Chucko, Greg Nemisz and Tom Erixon in the 1st round.
Every one of those selections would’ve been better spent on NHL players who could have helped Iggy, Regehr and Kipper.
3. Failing to find a backup goalie capable of playing 30 games a year.
4. The Phaneuf trade. Just… God no.
5. Not getting enough for some valuable 2004 pieces/trading them in the first place. Specifically, Chris Clarke, Lydman, Montador and Commodore. Sold them all for Pennies on the dollar, and spent the rest of his tenure replacing them when he didn’t need to.
Things got away from him after 2009.
2003-2009, however, he was trying to win a championship with a couple elite players in their primes. But he held onto his picks when he should’ve spent them.
