…maybe Darryl would embrace a rebuild?

I actually thought this was going on! Why is he hell bent on playing Markstrom and Lucic in top six. I think Sutter didn't like the Huberdeau signing.

Can we trade Trelivinf then? At least get some value?

Darryl doesn't want the actual job he just wants to call the shots.

Come on down Mike Futa.

Maybe Eric D's wacky CGY/MTL trade idea has legs

Seems fair to assume Treliving and Sutter are not on the same page with how Phillips and Pelletier have been handled with their callups. Ownership is crazy if they think giving Darryl the GM role again will be a good thing. This team is screwed even worse if that happens.

I have a hard time seeing Treliving returning if this team misses the playoffs and Huberdeau continues to have a disastrous season as he is quickly looks to have perhaps the worst contract in the league kicking in next year

I don't really trust much coming out of Seravellis mouth. Guy builds his own narratives it seems like.

If it's true, eff Sutter. If not true, shut up serivalli and hand in your reporter card.

Can't help but get a knot in your stomach knowing we've come full circle in a 20 year cycle.

Maybe for Travis Hamonic or Fattenberg.

If the Flames were a chess game, they've likely positioned themselves poorly and will lose which ever way they choose to play this out. Let Sutter GM, relive the sins of the past. Can Sutter and keep tree, that's 6 coaches, unheard of .

Ultimately, I think all this is setting up for a complete and total overhaul of the management group. All the AGMs and GM be gone.

Sutter the GM acquired:

Kiprusoff for a 2nd
Langkow for Gauthier and Saprykin
Huselius for a song
Tanguay for Leopold
Bourque for a 2nd
Cammalleri for a swap of 1sts + Tanguay to MTL
Jokinen for Lombardi, Prust and a 1st

Notable draftees/UDFAs:

Phaneuf at 9th overall
Giordano for free
Brodie in the 4th
Backlund in the low 20s

Notable extensions:

Iginla - 3Y/$21M, 5Y/$35M
Kiprusoff - 3Y/$10M, 6Y/$35M
Phaneuf - 6Y/$39M
Langkow - 4Y/$18M
Regehr - 5Y/$20M

Sutter’s biggest failures as GM, to my mind:

1. Failing to acquire Joe Thornton from Boston. Rumor was he offered Leopold, the Bruins asked for Regehr, and Sutter hung up. He should’ve put Dion on the table.

2. Not trading enough 1st round picks. This may seem counterintuitive, but Darryl drafted Matt Pelech, Leland Irving, Kris Chucko, Greg Nemisz and Tom Erixon in the 1st round.

Every one of those selections would’ve been better spent on NHL players who could have helped Iggy, Regehr and Kipper.

3. Failing to find a backup goalie capable of playing 30 games a year.

4. The Phaneuf trade. Just… God no.

5. Not getting enough for some valuable 2004 pieces/trading them in the first place. Specifically, Chris Clarke, Lydman, Montador and Commodore. Sold them all for Pennies on the dollar, and spent the rest of his tenure replacing them when he didn’t need to.

Things got away from him after 2009.

2003-2009, however, he was trying to win a championship with a couple elite players in their primes. But he held onto his picks when he should’ve spent them.

Reporter speculation like this brings zero value. He has a “sense” that a rift is brewing based on interviews. There’s no substance or anything other than a feeling at this point. What is the point of releasing this type of information with no confirmed sources or facts. Just because he works in the media shouldn’t give him a free pass to post rumours of this nature. Sure, it can generate fan interest and speculation however at this point it’s not that much different than me saying Tre and Sutter hang out on Fridays over some beers based on a conversation I had with one of them at Market Mall. The media needs to be better. I guess this is why playing/coaching/managing in a Canadian market can be less desirable.

If Darryl Sutter is GM in 2023 we should sell the team.
In your scenario, who is “we”?

Honestly, the dreaded ‘Canadian media’ Is so overblown, outside Toronto and Montreal.

I remember when Frank Seravalli ruined the Seattle expansion draft by revealing every single pick in advance.

Ya, virtually every single Canadian media market is filled with company reporters. When actual reporting happens people are blown away. Treliving calls up Pelletier, in the first intermission of the Hawks game he makes it clear that he called Pelletier up to play and that he is excited to see him in action. 6 games later he waits. TSN reporter reports there may be a riff and it is seen as an actual event as opposed to reporting.

It’s also super obvious any time there’s an actual scandal that requires a tough question - all the regular beat reporters sound like it’s the first time they’ve had to cover a real story.

Clicks of course. Literally his job as an "insider" is to report/peddle trade rumours and speculation. There's clearly an appetite and audience for this stuff. He's got to do the radio hits to promote himself and his site and keep the clicks coming.
