I'm very happy with text messaging handoff - works really well. Still puzzling why you have to enable an email for iMessage in order for it to work though.
Handoff via Safari works very well too - though for me I find far less applications for this than text messaging.

Quick question for the Mac folk : I have been told by my office to get a new MacBook Air and give my "old" mid-2011 one to someone else in the office. While I don't have a lot of files on it per se, I could do without the hassle of setting everything up from scratch at this particular time. And I need to do this by the end of the week.
So my question is : should I just suck it up start fresh, or use a Time Capsule backup and the Migration Assistant to try and hit the ground running? Is it reliable and easy to do it like this, or will I just end up having to start from scratch again afterwards anyway?

I used the Migration Assistant once and was very impressed how easy it was. I went from a MacBook to an iMac, I was prompted for a few things and everything transferred without a hitch. This was three or four years ago, so I don't know if the quality has decreased since.

The last time I used the migration assistant was on Mountain Lion and it worked perfectly. I would definitely give it a try.

I know people always complain about glitches when a new Apple OS is released, but I'm fairly confident in saying that the initial version of Yosemite is the glitchiest release in a long time. I manage around 1000 Mac machines, so I have seen the way new and old machines respond to upgrades over the years. I imaged a handful of laptops, of various native OS builds, to 10.10 to test the upgrade and have seen numerous problems- particularly with booting. Seems like a PRAM and SMC reset fixes things, but my guess is the general public won't know how to do this and will subsequently be making a lot of genius appts. Also seen wifi problems. Third party software compatibility is always an issue with a new OS, but there seems to be a lot more issues this time around.

I had more problems with the production Yosemite upgrade installation than a clean beta installation.
I was having all kinds of strange performance issues on my 13" MBPr. Basically any of the fancy new transitions were a slideshow. Moving windows with translucency was like doing it on a remote desktop on a bad connection. Repaired disk permissions, reset PRAM & SMC and all seems to be well now, but only a handful of customers would even know to do that.

Been a big Apple supporter. But between the Apple TV and iPhone OS issues, I'm seriously considering switching to something else. Dropped calls and wifi issues on iPhone really have me choked. Had to download Tunein app to listen to internet radio through Airplay on iPhone. And still Apple support says it's an IP issue. Grrrr. It's never been this bad before.

Has anyone bought an MFi video game controller for their iPad? Any recommendations? It seems the only one officially blessed by Apple is the Steel Series one but it is 80 bucks and that's more than I want to spend.

My iPhone 5 has a cracked screen. Anyone have any recommendations as to where to go to get it replaced, where it would not be very expensive?

iPhix has it listed as $129.
I had my 4s screen replaced a few weeks ago and had a great experience with iPhix. They've got a phone booth sized location in TD Core Mall downtown, dropped my phone off a lunch, picked it up after work.

I usually get my battery replaced after 2 years through iPhix as well. Solid service every time I've used them.

I'm honestly still kicking myself a bit for not having my battery replaced at the same time as my screen fix. They didn't try to up sell me on it and I just didn't bother to ask. Really should have had it done at that time.

BUMP!
Just bought my wife a standard MBP, and want to upgrade the hard drive and RAM but don't know much about Macs.
For the drive, I've heard that Samsungs make the best SSDs.
Is there a huge difference between the Evo and Pro series?
Is this a good deal? Or should I be springing for the pro series?

For the RAM. I want to upgrade her 4GB to 8GB. I know less about this than SSDs though. Can anyone suggest a good upgrade? Or tell me exactly what I should be looking for?
I did search on here and found a few threads, but the latest one was a year old, and I didn't want to bump those so I thought I'd check here.

Intel makes the most reliable SSDs but there are faster ones out there.

For current MBPs you're out of luck afaik. The RAM is soldered onto the motherboards and can't be upgraded, and the SSDs aren't soldered on but use a proprietary connector.

If it's not a brand new one, the upgrade options will vary depending on what model, you'd have to post the model # to be able to tell for sure.
Samsung SSDs are great the new 850's use 3D NAND to increase storage while staying on larger lithography (bigger transistors) meaning the drives are more durable.

But depending on what model your laptop is you might have to stick with mSATA or might not be able to upgrade at all.
EDIT: I'd put Samsung up there with Intel at this point, they're pretty impressive right now.

I had two Intel 510s die on me. Take my anecdotal evidence that they suck as gospel.

Model # is MD101LL/A
Like I said...I know little about Macs, but Google tells me I can switch the RAM.
Does that seem right with that model number?
Also....what's the difference whether I purchase 2x4GB (like this) vs buying just a single 8GB (like this) ?
Is either way preferred over the other?
