I haven't been following this thread so don't know if it's been mentioned but has anyone here used a Traeger? We had the most delicious Traeger-cooked meat on the weekend. I was so impressed. I want one. They're available from Costco.

Dont have a Traeger but the Green Mountain Grills one I bought is amazing. I think the key is simply how the pellet grills work. Basically a fully automated smoker. It's actually hard to screw it up IMO. Grab one and dont look back!

The GMG Daniel Boone I bought is essentially the same concept as a Traeger. I think the GMG are a better built grill. I talked to the guy at Costco Traeger roadshow and he wasn't super knowledgeable about grills, just a sales job not a passion. They also were all out of the 22inch grills so they had the super huge 32" and the little tiny grill that I'm not sure what you would do on it.
I bought mine at Paradise Bay, I think they are the only retailer in Calgary that sell GMG. The guy I talked to there was pretty into grills.
Although with Costco you get the no risk money back guarantee, so that is probably worth something.

What we're they retailing for over @ Paradise Bay if you dont mind me asking?
I've heard they are considered better but I also think they're about 250-350 more than the Traeger comparable.

Is your bottom dampener a sliding plate or a dial?
If it's a plate then it's a 4000 and superior to the 5000 at low and slow.

Yeah mine's a sliding plate. I don't what the dial is, and will have to google that to see what it would mean.

I paid $900 + tax for the Wifi Model in Black.
The non-wifi would have been $100 cheaper.
They were on sale though, I think regular price of my grill was $1025.

Pardon my ignorance on this but what's wifi for?
And with your username I imagine you have a propane or NG barbecue.

Wifi allows you to control the grill from anywhere, as well as monitor grill temp and meat temp.
You can also preprogram profiles such as smoke at 150 for 2 hours then raise temp to 450 for 3 hours.
My username is actually a reference to my area of work (I am involved in oil and gas)

That is the non wifi version, the ad is for Paradise Bay, so Checks out, I imagine the wifi version is still $900 then.

GMG customer service is also amazing. There was a spot on the back where the paint was peeling off, we called about paint and they sent a rep out, he went through the entire grill, repainted the peeled spot and told us if it peels again they will replace the whole grill. If it doesn't peel he said to call him anyways and he'll send us some g mats and accessories for the 'inconvenience'. Also said they fix and donate all defective grills.
I also highly recommend the pizza oven attachment for the GMG. It is awesome!

Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for finding a grill grate for a fire pit? Our fire pit has a 26" diameter, but we could go as small as 24.5". Basically this is just for occasional cooking food over the fire at our permanent campsite, so I'm not looking to spend a tonne on it. Hoping for something under $30. I thought it would be easy to find; most I see are in the $70 and up price range.

It might, but we don't really need the tripod. Plus I would think the tripod would make it swing too much. Just something like this, in 25" or more:

I decided to get a new bbq yesterday because I found a deal that I couldn't refuse. I'm too poor for a really fancy grill so I bought a decent Broil Mate (the biggest one they have available.) It is a nice 5 burner unit with a side burner. I did a burn this evening after getting it assembled and it feels a bit hotter than my previous grill. The only thing I'm not too certain about is if I will like the stainless steel cooking grates. I previously had cast iron grates and I loved those things.

I've got a Kamado Joe and I wanted to try making some pizza. Did some reading and rather than a pizza stone, apparently a slab of steel is great to make it on. Unfortunately, the product they are shilling is stupid expensive to ship to Canada, so instead, I did a bit more digging and am now in contact with a local shop to make a simple plate out of raw steel for me for half the price. Hope it turns out!

i bbq'd pizza last night for the first time in quite a while.
i have a pizza oven contraption that sits on my grill. fire up the grill, put the pizza box thing inside and let it warm up for a bit, prepare the pizza and grill. only drawback is that you sometimes need to put the pizza in the oven on broil for a couple of minutes to get the top crusty.
