The pitchforks and torches are definitely coming out tonight.
I'm pretty surprised Lowe didn't make any moves today and I'm frustrated by the comments that he "tried really hard" but still didn't get anything done. However, I've said for a while that it's a long off-season and I'm willing to give Lowe all summer to make the moves he is planning on making.

I think Lowe is hoping to go the UFA route in getting some help this year. I was a bit shocked he didn't trade any of the picks also but it didn't suprise me that he wanted to get some things going through the farm system because they will need that just as bad as help this year.
Draft was good too watch, it was nice to see some faces as most of them I just knew them by name.
Very happy with what Sutter did to turn his 1 pick into two as the player he seemed to want was available at 24.

Let see here the biggest issue with the Oiler last year was defenceman, you gave lowe all last summer and all this year and this spring, still nothing...and this team isnt looking as good as a year ago at this time.

I think it was probably hard to trade these picks for anything substantial. Unless they were throwing some decent roster players into the trade mix as well, I don't see how they were supposed to be getting a superstar in return.
Obviously if Lowe fails to either trade for some good players, or make a UFA splash, he should be fired.

To be honest, I don't really give a crap if Lowe makes his moves in June or if he makes them in August - I'll be happy as long as he makes the correct moves.
I'm an impatient person so I would have ideally liked to see Lowe make some earth-shattering moves today but it's not the end of the world yet. Now if Lowe struggles to attract anyone via free agency, my opinion will change very quickly.

Yep, it seemed fairly obvious that first rounders in this year's draft were not exactly highly valued commodities. Heck, Vokoun is signed for 4 years at a reasonable rate and he ended up getting dealt for the same thing as 2 months of Tkachuk at the deadline.

It's amazing how the TSN commentators reminded everybody that it was supposed to be a weaker draft year, yet most of the later first round picks were greeted with some variation of "I can't believe he didn't go top 10!"

I should have known Darryl Sutter would have never said who he really wanted, complete smokescreen everytime, looks like a nice pick with a couple Zetterberg/Forsberg comparisons, Wow, how did he know no one else would pick him?

I'm guessing there were 3-4 players the Flames still liked at 18, and thought they could get them at 24.
From the post-draft comments, there seemed to be a whole pool of players Sutter loved.

Funny comments on TSN
http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/onrait/?id=211569
THE EDMONTON OILERS SELECT DEFENCEMAN ALEX PLANTE OF THE CALGARY HITMEN 15TH OVERALL.
8:50 - Doug: "This is a kid that has a big upside. Big powerful defenceman" Holy crap he is a huge kid. They even have his name put on the back of his jersey. I guess they liked him. The Oiler fans at www.hockeysfuture.com are likely not happy with this and would have prefered Cherapanov.
Took a peak at HF... yeah, they're really not liking it. Even their Bingo's of the board want Lowe fired.

We did well with Backlund in this draft. I counted 11 players who were taken before him who are busts or are less valuable today.
Hickey, Gagner, Hamil, Ellerby, Plante, Gillies, MacMillan, Esposito, Riley Nash, Blum.
Backlund has developed into an elite #3C and with 21pts in 28 games since his return, has shown that he can contribute offensively as well.
Also, happy birthday Backs!
