How is it a brutal trade? It is the equivalent of a late 1st/early 2nd. and then two middish 2nds.

can bump up every pick by one because the Sens forfeit their 1st.

This is a very good deal for a vet who has been on the decline. Castagna is big, fast as hell, and still developing. Three seconds in this draft is exciting, and gives us a shot at the Ruck twins- even if it doesn’t, there are plenty of gems in the 2nd round.

Excellent job by Conny.

Solid return. Wrong side of 30, having his worst season and is like $6M for another 5 years.

Incredible to get rid of that contract.

https://www.cornellsun.com/article/2...he-faceoff-dot

Quote:
It doesn’t matter that junior forward Jonathan Castagna is one of the best faceoff men in the NCAA.

It doesn’t matter that his 63.9% win rate is the best among all college hockey players with at least 300 faceoff wins — 338 and counting, good for 12th most in the NCAA. Or that he is one of four players in all of college hockey who have won more than 300 draws with a success rate over 60%.

At the end of the day, when the stat sheet gets back to him after every game, Castagna eyes his percentage. But not to compare to the other top centers in the NCAA, or to make sure he’s still dotting leaderboards across the country.

Instead, he’s seeing how he compares to junior forward Ryan Walsh.

“They compete,” said associate head coach Sean Flanagan, who works specifically with Cornell’s centers. “They compete in the classroom, on the ice, and they love seeing that every week. They all do.”

Quote:
Castagna and Walsh are very different players. Castagna will beat you with speed and tenacity — a “terror” on the ice, Flanagan said — while Walsh’s creativity, finesse and sometimes brooding physicality burn his opponents.

These are merely darts for the scouts that have already picked great value with late picks outside the top 32. Utah had plenty of picks to spare and are using them for an upgrade.
I agree that I'm probably out to lunch. But other teams could be just as interested in having a number of darts instead of one. Especially if they're not sold on the top of the draft, for whatever reason.

I'll look back on this thread in the summer and laugh about how wrong I was, I'm sure.

All about the picks! Little sad to not get a higher tier prospect but meh Weegar was subpar this year so I get it. Excited for a boat load of high end prospect watching next year!

Six picks in the first two rounds, and eight in the first three rounds, is nuts.

I don't love the return, but the Flames have been able to find some good players at the draft. The 3 2nds would likely result in at least 1 top 4D/top 6F.

Conroy's 2nd rounders so far:
#41 - Basha
#48 - Morin
#54 - Stockselius
#62 - Battaglia

Maatta will really help the tank if he's bad enough to play the next 20+ games.

Parayko is potentially getting a prospect who was picked top ten last year + a 1st. I wouldn’t think the drop off in value should be this substantial.

Always sounds like a pipe dream, but perhaps they package the Vegas and New York picks to get into the top half.

The value is fair but I would have waited to make the deal I think.

Buffalo reportedly has Mrtka and a 1st on the table for Parayko.

If that falls through are we sure they wouldn't circle back to the Flames?

How about San Jose, Detroit or others looking for a RH dman.

I figured the speed at which this traded happened meant is was a clear overpay and flames were getting a true blue chip prospect back.

Instead it feels like a bit like a grab bag of good but not great pieces
