I see a lot of hand waving about how mean NDP voters are from UCP voters who have racked up 20-30 posts in this thread telling others to shut up or #### off, laughing at them, insulting them, and generally being everything they pretend to take issue with.
Pretty much the election in a nutshell.

It’s too bad, the people who voted in the UCP should defend on a policy level what the UCP does. It would be nice to have spirited political debate about policy.

That's very disappointing if true. Shameful. It took me 10 minutes to vote.

As usual, the fairweather conservative voters show up in this thread during election time. Next time, come debate people with facts and data during non-election times - prove the others wrong instead of only showing up when it's convenient.

Unfortunately a majority of Alberta voters would have bought into that rhetoric and I doubt the result changes. Just my opinion though.

Look at the post by Calf 4 posts up. If she combined with the AP they would have won that seat in Calgary! .....

Looking at Calgary NW, there's 1 poll left to report.
NDP is down ~300 votes, Alberta Party has 750

For that to happen you'd also need to have the support to do that if your campaign contributors to go off the NDP and any financial support from the NDP proper and from last elections.
While Notley may be closer to center than most NDP'ers in this province and in this country, starting a new party in the middle wouldn't likely have brought over enough campaign funds or party structure and organization from those supporters on the far left and NDPer who wave the flag in general no matter who leads the party.

while the UCP looks like they're going to lose about 11 seats, but its still a hefty mandate. Its probably the end of Rachel Notley, she had a lot of momentum and really lost it through the election. I don't really think she ran a terrific campaign, none of them did. This was a election based around negativity.
I'm interested in voter turnout, I was surprised today, when I went to vote, it was empty.
The UCP was fairly far ahead on popular vote, and still look to get a big majority.
I think part of it is this. In the last week of so of the election, they bought in Nenshi who went full negative, they bought in Lukasik (sp) and other former Redford Cons who went full negative, and they might have turned off voters.
The NDP can take some comfort in gaining some seats in Calgary, and there are some UCP cabinet members that aren't going back to Edmonton which is a good thing.
But this has to be disappointing for the NDP. I don't know how this province can be bought back together.

The polls got this election exactly right. The 338 polling average had it 52-35.

Well so much for political discourse in this province. With a looney like Smith winning and openly bigoted candidates winning handily this will no doubt be a huge confidence boost for the Take Back Alberta extremists. They're probably going to see how far they can push the envelope now, wonder how long it is until we see more Republican policies imported up here like anti-trans legislation and book bans

And like it or not, the rural areas, and the oil and gas folks are just right wing. They aren’t centrist. Educated people in oil and gas I know spew carbon tax myths.

It's because both parties sucked, there was really no one to vote for. I know a few people who didn't vote because they couldn't stomach Notley or Smith. I know lots of people who voted ucp just to keep the NDP out, not because they liked Smith. It was a terrible election. A decent third option would have been nice.

"Where we fell short, the responsiblity rests entirely with me." - Rachel Notley
That's the talk of a strong leader. I really liked that remark in her concession speech.
