Also, how bad of a manager is Roberto Martinez? Guy has been in charge of Belgium for about 3-4 international tournaments now and they have always underachieved. Not taking anything away from Herdman. He had a great gameplan for Belgium, but Martinez is awful and I don't understand why Belgium have kept him on for so long.
They just let Canada come at them. Passing it around passively until Canada could steal it back and head north.
Incredible effort - and game plan - from Canada. I would be livid if I was Belgian, watching that.

Only two, 2018 and 2020 and he lost to the eventual champions each time. 2016 Wilmotts was the manager who lost to Wales. He's gone this time if they don't make semifinals again. So I'm not sure they've underachieved. We often forget that Belgium is a small nation.

I do not understand how there was not at least one more penalty kick awarded to Canada.
I thought the point of VAR was to get it right.
Is this just a homer view of those plsys?

I think they are homer views.
The 1st one, handball was given.
The 2nd one, the defender got the ball before the man. You can see it in the slo-mo.
The 3rd one, the defender has inside position and Laryea is trying to get around him and falls over. Yes, there may have been a foot stepped on but that would be like in NFL where receiver and defender tangle legs. The defender is entitled to that space. This isn't McDavid has a right to the net garbage.

Couldn't they have done something nicer for the Canada jerseys now that we actually made the world cup? I was looking at buying one but they are so plain and boring - they look like T-shirts!

the red ones are nice. The white, and the black ones look like t-shirts
What an incredibly strong performance from Canada. I loved them coming out on the front foot and pressing non stop. Deserved a better fate but you have to score a goal to win! Really proud of their performance.

The big missed one was when they put off the off side flag on the pass back that wouldn't be off side. That was reviewable, but they didn't call down for some reason. The fox guys think it is because the auto off-side technology called it a good offside because it is not designed to account for pass backs.

The Laryea should have been a penalty IMO.
Defender had inside position and Laryea beats him, the ball is still there for him to cross, and the defender clearly clips his legs.
Intentional or not by the defender that’s a penalty

100%
That's a foul in the middle of the park they were calling all game, it's certainly a call in the box. No intent and it's also at the same time not as if he was trying to cut across sharply into the defenders space, he was pulling away forward and got clipped on the back foot.
That one was the one that VAR looked at I believe, is there an official explanation that comes with a negative VAR review?

Can they take yellow cards off the books after the fact? Davies's didn't look warranted on the replay and it would be nice if he could play without that on his mind.

I think that’s the most annoying piece of how they’ve implemented VAR overall; there’s no real explanation. In rugby, you can hear the conversation between the ref on the pitch and the guy in the booth. You know what they’re checking and what the rationale is for the decision. They should have this in soccer, but I think they don’t want to give that rationale, largely because it will infuriate fans.

While a blow by blow live review would be good, even a post game explanation for any formal VAR review that stops the game for 2+ mins should be part of the procedure.
