Seriously, stop derailing this thread and take the "corsi" discussion elsewhere.

If you are going to be condescending, at least take the time to understand what is being discussed first. I wasn't talking about predictions but of the absurdity of arguing the standings are incorrect when determining who the better team has been.
But, to your comment - the only thing statistics are capable of doing is commenting on previous events. Any prediction of the future is based entirely on our interpretation of the past, as determined by those statistics.

Silly me, all this time I'd been thinking a crystal ball was the exact definition of a predictive tool!

If a model's recent past predictions fail to account for the present, and its distant past projections fail to account for the recent past, then how can anyone trust that its present predictions will account for the future?

3 games tonight that could affect the flames
Jets @ Blues
Devils @ Wild
Kings @ Avalanche
with our OOT luck lately, and since I never win @ sports select. I picked up a ticket to see if the OOT will turn in the flames favor tonight.

Redone as games above 0.500:
Vancouver +14
Minnesota +13
Calgary +11
Winnipeg +12
----------------------
LA +10
San Jose +7
Colorado +5
Dallas +2
This method highlights better the chasm between 8th and 9th. San Jose would have to gain 6 games over 0.500 more than the flames and LA.
Really need Winnipeg and LA to lose a few games here. Like quite a few. Calgary is in the drivers seat, but the power steering just went

Incidentally, if every team finished out with a 0.500 record:
Vancouver 96 points
Minnesota 95 points
Calgary 93 points
Winnipeg 94 points
----------------------
LA 92 points
San Jose 89 points
Colorado 87 points
Dallas 84 points

I can't believe the Canucks beat the ducks on 16 shots. Lack isn't even that good.

I think the 3 game series between VAN and LA is going to have a huge impact on the standings. If LA wins 2 then Vancouver is back within grasp. If VAN wins 2 then LA is in big trouble. If a team sweeps the three game set it could mean the end of one of the teams. Hopefully only 6 points rather then 9 are handed out.

Ahhh I see someone employs my gambling strategy!
I always bet against the result I want. That way there's a positive side either way.

A sweep wouldn't end either team. Those three games are six points of an available 32 for each team. The Canucks have a buffer, and so would still be in a fight with four teams - it'd just be a tougher fight. The Kings would likely be unable to catch the Canucks, but they might still be able to catch one of the wild card teams or the Flames, depending on what those teams do.
It's clearly an important series but it's not utterly crucial.

Especially considering LA has two more against the Edmonton "free square on the bingo card" Oilers

Geez, the Canucks are hard to figure out. Lose to Sabres couple weeks ago then beat Anaheim
