The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!
In the lead-up to the draft last year I was concerned that all of Monahan's goals seemed like garbage goals, in the sense that he'd whack it in from right in front of the net and the crease. I was a bit worried he wouldn't be able to translate that game to the pros because he wouldn't have as much space to work in front of the bet. Boy was I wrong!
His shooting precision (both goals against the Coilers last night, for example) is really impressive. He plays a simple game and makes it look really easy, but the boy's got game!
You mean like Phil Esposito?

The best part is that he does so many of the little things that are already impressive... He wins battles along the boards against bigger, stronger veterans that are often top players. He's already improving in the face-off dot. He has an NHL quality shot. He has a strong defensive game. He's super mature, well spoken, and humble. He's committed to constantly improving (for example, he went and trained over the break instead of going to cancun or something).
Now you take all those qualities and think about the fact he's only 19 and has room to improve. He's going to get stronger on the puck than he already is. His speed should improve. He's going to get line mates with higher-end skill. His shot will be even better. His confidence to make plays will keep going up. This is just the beginning folks.
Hot damn, I'm excited for this kid. Great season so far.
Only 8 assists. Needs to develop as a playmaker too.
In defense of this, he is the designated shooter on his line almost always.
Baertschi, hudler are pass first players, mcgrattan and westgarth aren't exactly finishers, and he is used in the high slot on the pp, designated shooter.
Sign of the times that he is both leading the team in goals and has half as many goals as assists.
Only 8 assists. Needs to develop as a playmaker too.
Needs linemates that can score too.
Playmaking has never been a concern with Monahan, it was always said to be good. goal scoring was more of a concern to be honest. He started with Hudler and Baertschi, Sven seemed scared to shoot the puck and it seemed like Hudler creates his own chances more than he scores from being set up.
Since then most of the guys Monahan has played with don't have a history of goal scoring except Cammy who has been struggling.

Has he taken a slapshot yet? I don't thnk I've seen him take one
Seems like with the way he scores and from where he scores, slapshots would take too long and be impractical. Probably will only see them if he wants to shoot it on net to force a faceoff or something akin to that.
Monahan is really developing into a solid player, but who can he be compared to? It's probably a little early to say, but for the sake of it, who would you predict he might turn into based on what we've seen this season?
He doesn't have Sakic's shot, Iginla's shot or physicality, Crosby's passing ability, Kane's moves, Spezza's hands.... I can't think of anyone...
