Browsing wiki, there is some cool stuff on there:

Poetic Ring (Series As the Opening and Closing of A Circle)

There is a poetic ring to events of the series:
  • It begins with the Cylon attack on Colonies nearly wiping out mankind. It ends with the Colonial attack on the Cylon Colony very likely wiping out the Cylons who didn't join with the humans.
  • Shortly after the Cylon attack on Caprica, Gaius Baltar -- having unintentionally brought about the near-annihilation of the human species -- flees Caprica when Karl Agathon gives him his place on a Raptor, feeling that his own life is less important to save than a famed scientist's. But at the end of the series, it is Baltar who puts his own life at risk for the sake of saving Agathon's daughter Hera Agathon, considering it more important thatn his. Baltar expresses concern for Hera's future well being to the very end of the series (both ends of this parallel occur in wide open fields).
  • Agathon and Cylon Sharon Valerii are seen together near the very beginning of the series and near the very end.
  • The earliest known detail we learn of Gaius Baltar's life is his effort to break away from his family history as farmers, and his shame over this heritage. The last event we see in his embrace of a new beginning as a farmer.
  • Baltar and Caprica Six are seen together close to the very beginning of the series and close to the very end.
  • The earliest event we learn from Laura Roslin's life (retroactively) is the death of her sisters, killed during transit. The last event of her life that we see is her own death, which occurs during transit.
  • The series began with Battlestar Galactica's scheduled decommissioning and ends with her being scuttled in space.
  • The series begins with a selfish decision Baltar makes (to give Caprica Six access to military mainframes) that nearly destroys Colonial humanity. It ends with a selfless decision Baltar makes (to fulfill his destiny to save Hera) that gives Colonial humanity a new start in the form of Hera.
  • At the beginning of the series, William Adama divorces his wife soon after returning to Colonial military service. At the end of the series, Adama abandons all trappings of the military to be with his unofficial wife Laura Roslin, upon whose finger he puts his wedding ring after she dies.
  • This poetic ring is also in line with Romo Lampkin's observation of him being President of it being "Poetic justice" and Lee Adama's "What goes around, comes around" since Lampkin originally pushed him to become a politician. Indeed, the Cylons were revisited by the destruction they wrought on the human Colonies.

Nice writeup.

Although I still think Baltar savign Hera was nothing more than his ego believing he has a higher purpose to be a "god like" figure.

In his eyes, saving Hera was a means to an end IMO.

It also ends with the humans using Anders as a way to "hack" the colony defenses and shut them down.

i'm rewatching the series now, and it's amazing how things can tie together from start to end. especially in the episode where Ellen first appears, and Baltar uses his Cylon test on her. then 6 saying that everyone passes the test and Baltar saying he'll never tell the true results, likely meaning he knew she was one of the final 5 all along. his character's motivations early on are a lot easier to identify now that i've seen the entire series, makes his scenes much more interesting

But didn't Moore say they didn't know who the final 5 were going to be till the 3rd season?

Yeah, I think this is just a case of it working out in that episode.

On the Sci-fi Channel Battlestar Board, Ron D. Moore stopped by with some interesting notes, if anyone is still interested.

A couple of things:

There was a point in the development process where we discussed the idea of the Galactica not being destroyed, but having somehow landed on the surface more or less intact, but unable to ever get into orbit again (the particulars here were never worked out, so don't ask how she made it down without being torn apart). We talked about them basically abandoning the ship and moving out into the world. Cut to the present-day in Central America where there are these enormous mysterious mounds that archeologists have not been able to understand (it may have been South America, I can't recall the exact location, but these mounds really do exist). Someone is doing a new kind of survey of the mounds with some kind of ground-penetrating radar or something and lo and behold, we see the outlines of the Galactica still buried under the surface.

It was an intriguing idea and we bandied about for a while, but ultimately rejected it as a little too cute

AND

The example we talked about most frequently in the writers' room was that of Cortez burning his ships when he got to the New World as a way of making sure his men had no choice but to go forward and wouldn't be tempted to change their minds or go back. (This isn't an area of history that I pretend to have a great knowledge of, so I can't say with any certainty that this is anything more than legend.) We liked the idea that Adama would do something similar here, putting the Colonists in a position that they had to go forward, not back and that they would have to embrace their new world without having other options at hand.

AND

We talked quite a bit about the Christian mythos and how the story of Kara Thrace would track with it. Kara did literally die -- Baltar rationally proves that -- and she is literally resurrected. He talks about the implications of that in ep 20 and how it held out hope to people for some sort of existence that transcended death.

Some other things at this link if you're interested:

I watched the final episode with my gf, and when I saw the ships heading towards the sun I mentioned to her that it was like Cortez burning his ships when he reached the new world to motivate his men, and she looked at me like I farted in a church.

She obviously doesn't appreciate your genius.

WASHINGTON—According to sources in the White House, President Barack Obama has been uncharacteristically distant and withdrawn ever since last month's two-hour series finale of Battlestar Galactica

Sources confirmed that instead of meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday, the depressed president sat alone in the Oval Office, scouring Internet message boards for posts by other fans about the series conclusion.

During an emergency press conference on Wednesday, Obama addressed his recent detachment, as well as various other matters facing the United States.

"Our nation finds itself in uncharted territory in the deep emptiness of space," Obama announced. "The Old Girl has limited supplies, no allies, and now, no hope. I never said this would be an easy journey. Yet I promise you this: There is a place where there is no war and no economic turmoil. It is where, according to the Sacred Scrolls handed down to us by the Lords of Kobol, the thirteenth tribe traveled over three thousand years ago. That place is called Earth. Not the other Earth. This Earth. It's complicated. Anyway, I plan to take us there."

onto season 3 now of my rewatch of the whole series, and i just have to proclaim that the episodes Exodus parts 1 and 2 (escape from New Caprica) has to be likely the best 90 minutes any TV show has ever put on screen. the scene of Galactica jumping into the atmosphere and releasing the vipers just before jumping out again is epic beyond words

I gotta ask, how is Kara Thrace the "harbinger of death" as pointed out by the hybrid in Razor?

Well she did lead the "human" race to their end on the new earth, since it appears that we all became some sort of human/cylon hybrid over time due to Hera.

The full quote is:

"You are the harbinger of death, Kara Thrace. You will lead them all to their end."

Some might speculate that her role in the destruction of the Resurrection Hub, which made all skin jobs mortal, would make her the harbinger of death.

And she did lead them all to their end - as in the end of the journey - in the series finale.

I think you can buy the Caprica pilot on DVD right now. Thanks for the reminder!!!

The Caprica pilot was leaked a week ago and is on TPB and other torrents already. I wonder if it was done on purpose to make up for the crappy finale. A sort of apology to the fans maybe?
