Yeah there is - make the defensive play situational. I.e., in each situation, a hit, poke check, stick lift, pin-to-boards, block the passing lane, whatever should be the most effective play, and they should be pretty close to balanced. I.e., when defending, you should find yourself using each of those plays regularly. They should be more or less equal in effectiveness depending on how the other team attacks - i.e., if they try to blow by you, maybe a poke check (or hit) is the way to go, if they try to stickhandle around you, hit them, if they try to cycle along the boards, pin them, if they're doing tic-tac-toe passing, put your stick down and block it.
That is not how it is right now. Right now there is basically no reason to use ANYTHING other than the poke check. I use it all the time too - I try to use the other things because I like to play the game intuitively, but the pokecheck is so overpowered that you're basically nerfing yourself if you don't make it your primary defensive tool. And that's really lame.
Spamming means getting in roughly the vicinity of the opponent and then just button mashing the R1 button until the puck flies away. That should be penalized - slowing down the poke check recovery (so it takes longer to do your second one, in between which the offensive player can just skate right around you) is one way of doing it. Penalties are another. But the game should be tuned in such a way as to encourage people to wait until the right moment and press the poke check button ONCE, because if it doesn't work the first time, you're going to be out of position, or because you know if you hit it more than that you're probably going to the box. It should not, as it currently does, permit people to mash that button over and over and over again on faith that no one can skate by you as long as you keep hitting that button. That's spamming.

there is a penalty....you slow down and it might not seem like a huge penalty with the new hustle button people can absolutely blow by you especially if you're skating backwards and mashing poke. hell they blow by me even if i skate backwards too long

Well done ea, another year with a pretty meh product, then u release a tuner and just ruin the game.
This game is now NHL 12 with garbage player control (tru performance skating lol) and no hitting physics.
Game sucks now.

Tuner 1.04
All Modes
Greater chance of penalty being called if a player is tripped (stumbles will now be considered trips)
Pokecheck less effective in HUT
Goalies less vulnerable on shots from distance on the rush on Game Styles Normal and Hardcore.
Decreased AI ability to make long stretch passes when Users were calling for a pass.
Offline
Increase penalty calls across the board
Increase effect of CPU Opponent and CPU Teammate penalty sliders
Increase chance of slash being called on stick lift from a bad angle
Increase likelihood of interference being called
Increase chance of CPU clearance being played over the boards
Increase chance of boarding, charging and hitting from behind being called
Increase time CPU will finish checks after puck is released
|
Damn. As a big poke checker the stumble trips not being a penalty were a big help! The offline changes seem pretty good.

hating the new tuner.
playing offline season:
My main beefs, as i'm playing a season:
1) Once the cpu is out of their zone it is essentially impossible to get the puck back. You basically need to wait for them to take a shot, get a few rebounds as their always first, until eventually getting the puck back. In order to break the cycle will have to go back to playing a "hitting is the best defense" style, in other words, back to NHL 11/12/etc standard gameplay, Yawn.
2) Penalties are stupid. Great my guys get called for trips now. I have played 10 games since the patch, and i think i've had a PP once during that period. Did EA even test this tuner config??
3) Goalies/Goals. Why are CPU goals so much simpler (snipe shots short side, point wristers that bounce off my goalies pads and back into the net, etc), yet my shots are saved by spider goalie repeatedly. Well at least cross crease is back
4) Hitting sucked in nhl 13, and now it's brought to the forefront. I wonder if ea makes hitting physics a big upsell again in the next year's version haha. amazing how many times a small guy like sam gagne can knock down a much bigger dman, yet when the big dman lays the body on him he bounces off 8 out of 10 times. CPU vs player hitting effectiveness is completely out of whack, the physics are non-existent.
5) skating is sluggish, which i suppose it's supposed to be, great. Why is it that sometimes when i switch player to a dman, he just stops moving completely?!? why is the CPU never penalized for their skating momentum, and are ALWAYS first to the rebounds that go to the boards?
the game is back to try to score on the rush, or once every 10 times, get some actual offensive zone time to try to cycle. Then wait for 1-2 mins in your own zone as the CPU walks circles around you. Get bored, poke check, get a tripping call (if the cpu hasn't sniped a short side goal by that time of course).
I get that i can change the tuner, but prefer playing offline wiht the standard online tuner so that the game isn't completely different when i go to online vs/HUT.
i suppose, it's another year, where i stop playing online, and completely tweak the offline settings to my liking (tone down cpu hitting, puck control, shot accuracy).
i find it funny that ea has a vision of change for the game, it comes out mixed reviews, and then they revert back to the same game that has been out there for years. Boring stuff.

Wow, new sliders broke it even worse. Now I feel like the game is at hyperspeed. AI defence now lets me walk to the net? almost all of the point of the new skating has been eliminated. Long break out passes are super accurate now. Also, it it literally impossible to check the puck off of the CPU out of their zone. It is also hilarious that Cammy is my big hitter. This game is just plain broken with these sliders. They need new ones and stat!

ya, the game has become almost unplayable with the new tuner (offline).
I loved watching sam gagne bounce off checks from giordano/sarich, yet when giordano/sarich got a clean/square hit on gagne against the boards, he didn't lose his balance, didn't lose the puck, and just bounced off the check and continued forward momentum.
Brutal game physics. I am certain we'll be told about the new "game changer" true performance physics hitting engine in an upcoming year as the big marketing item.

Tuned the game out of existence.

I think EA needs to have more confidence in their decisions. They are trying to listen to whoever yells the loudest, and that's a poor strategy imo. Sometimes people have legitimate complaints, and sometimes people suck at the game and want to complain. There's a big difference and some of EA's decisions make me wonder at times if they are just trying too hard to please everybody.

While the idea of being able to tune a game all year long is attractive, it's basically an excuse to allow the customers to be the testers and report back shortcomings. Problem with that is the loudest voices control what the developers change (which isn't always a good thing).
Personally, I played about 4 games with the new tuners and found them to be alright. I could never hit for the life of me, and I still can't...but the CPU seems to be getting a lot of penalties. The game really opens up when I have the man advantage, and I think my PP % is something like 45%.
The nice thing about playing offline is that you can choose the tuner you like best and stick with it. Online, however, you're fudged.
