Is Byram even that good. Honest question not having watched him much.
Seems to be good offensively but maybe lacks defensively? Does he get sheltered with Ozone starts?
I plead ignorance on this one.

Potential teams that could be moving a LH dman that I can see:
Buffalo: Byram, Samuelsson
NYR: Miller, Lindgren
Utah: Cole, Maatta
San Jose: Ferraro (Flames were rumoured to have interest in the offseason)
Pittsburgh: Pettersson
Islanders: Romanov

I won't pretend I have seen a tonne of his play because it isn't easy to watch Colorado and Buffalo games in Calgary but when Colorado won the Cup, Byram was a huge contributor to that and when he has confidence he flies around the ice with his impressive skating.
If given more opportunity he could be a 20G, 60-70pt Dman IMO.
He isn't big, mean or rangy but his skating and hockey sense make him serviceable at defending.
Like I said he was never going to be above Makar or Dahlin on anyone's depth charts so I don't think we have seen his true potential outside of flashes here and there.
Edit: To add, he has been playing on the top pairing with Dahlin so I would say he doesn't get sheltered by any means.

Obvious for us, for the Sabres, cost controlled young center in return for one not living up to current contract. Need to replace L side D with serviceable Hanley. Picks and Brz to make up the value difference.

Over the last 2 seasons:
Cozens: 129 games, 28G, 45A, 73P, .566PPG
Frost...: 120 games, 24G, 42A, 66P, .550PPG
How much would you pay for that upgrade? 4th?
Brzustewicz + 1st for Byrum?
I wouldn't do that

I don't know why anyone is still talking about Cozens. The ship sailed. We acquired a centerman in the same tier and age range

Of those options, which ones would likely cost at most a 2nd round pick? Ideally cost more like a 3rd round pick at most.
I like Romanov’s physicality. Ferraro is a fairly safe defenseman. Byram would likely cost the most to acquire.

Fair points around production, but I do wonder how much the RHS along with age play into it. Counter point would be the more hefty contract if things don't work out with Cozens. In my mind, I'd argue that his age and RHS would be worth more than the 4th, and maybe it's an overpay but perhaps a late first or 2nd?
Regarding why it's still an interesting conversation around Cozens... it's not always just about him as a piece, it's also about discussion regarding what people perceive value to be in our players, picks etc. Plus, it's just good talk (imo)!

Hear you. Watching him play including live, i'm surprised he doesn't score even more. Really good skater while being pretty thick.....hits hard. Great shot. I think those head injuries early in his career changed the way he plays, but he still seems like a better 2-way blueliner than his numbers suggest.

Because some people can look beyond this season.
Kadri, Frost, Backlund, Zary(?) are our current crop of centers with nothing else in the pipeline.
Kadri will be 35 this year and Backlund is a UFA at the end of next season.
Not sure if it's Cozen's or not, but acquiring a young top two center is still very much at the top of our priority list.

Islanders traded a 13th overall pick for Romanov. I am not sure the price (for them) will have dropped much. I feel like they would at least want the Devil's first, and I wouldn't want to give that up.

Trent Frederic is the player I want. Wonder if Boston will stand pat or sell him.

I imagine they will be targeting centers heavily in the upcoming draft. By the time Kadri and Backlund start to see a significant decline, younger prospects should be able to step in. The need to trade for a C decreased dramatically.

Backlund's decline is happening right in front of our eyes.

Lol. This team is nowhere this year without Backlund.

Backlund is still a great two-way player who is important to the team. But I would like to see Coronato with someone with more offensive upside than Coleman and Backlund. I’ve mentioned Zary and I think he would be a great fit. After last night, I would love it if Klapka keeps up that level of play and the flames try a line of Coronato-Zary-Klapka.

I know Backs didn't end up with the offensive upside that was hoped for when he was drafted. I still blame Pierre McGuire for comparing him to Kopitar when chatting with Rob Kerr. But it just wouldn't be Flames fandom in this era if someone didn't #### on Backlund.

Coronato should stay on the right side. If only we had a young LW and young C with decent upside joining the team to try him with...
