The Flames could even take on bad salary if it helped increase the return. I wonder how much they would add to take “offensive dman” Samuel Girard and his 5 million a year for the next 3 years off their hands. The guy is an offensive dman who does not score goals and has never had a season outside the Covid year where he even had a PPG that would put him above 40 points. Could help them next year when they need to sign Rantanen, Drouin and O’Connor. Erik Brannstrom fills that under sized, supposed to be offensive but is not offensive, dman role for far cheaper.
If I was the Flames I would want a significant sweetener to take on Girard though.

Kadri back to Colorado is interesting. Have to think they may be entering burn the boat’s territory. 2 years removed from a cup. Won’t go so far as to say the window is near closing but the clock is ticking. MacKinnon doesn’t seem like a guy who is going to tolerate mot being aggressive, and I’m sure his voice carries some weight.

While the Avs probably would trade Girard, you have to remember, he's getting less power-play time than both Makar and Toews. You're not going to rack up the points that way.

Does Colorado even need Kadri with Mittelstadt there?
Also doubt they’d trade Girard after dealing Byram away.

Yes. I would say so. Kadri is a far stronger C. He would replace Landeskog, not necessarily Middlestadt.

He has never racked up points in his career though. To me he is what he is, an overpaid undersized mediocre offensive dman.

Oh, there's no question he's overpaid, at least on the Avs. For them he's a second-pairing blueliner, and when you have guys pulling the money that their big guys do, a 5 million dollar second pairing blueliner is a total luxury.
But I think if he went to another team and got prime PP time, his point totals will go up. Makar has been there since the year after he came, and Toews came the year he had his best season.

You also said it would take a signficant asset to take his contract. He might be overpaid, but not by a lot. He has value and if we added him the situation would change for him and his points could go up making him worth his contract. If that happens, he is a valuable trade piece. If not, you could get something for him with salary retained. Not sure why we would need a signficant asset to take him.

New shot in the dark..
Flames are waiting for Laine to clear the assisted program... Waddell would love to get rid of the Merzlikins contract, and Johnson hasn't had the greatest start in Columbus/fits young C Flames are after. Flames/Kuzmenko have no interest in extension talks before the season begins.
Something like:
Merzlikins/Laine/Johnson
For
Vladar/Kuzmenko

Damn, Sec with another Chimpanzee…
Girl misses the ball, meaning the Flames lost out on a big move?

Agreed, and cookie monster pointing was suggesting the poster was correct that something should be coming down the shoot after the big arena announcement.

Girard is paid like a top two dman but is at best a 4/5 dman. That is why you need an asset to take him, he is not very good. He has a muffin for a shot so he has to rely on assists to get any point totals. The Flames would currently have 3 dmen ahead of him on the team for PP time with a 4th that they drafted this year bumping him next year. He would be equally bad on the Flames and get almost no PP time here. But if Colorado wanted to add a significant asset to move him to open up 5 million in cap space for their shrinking Cup window, I am sure the Flames could help them out.
