You do know that there would have to be evidence of a crime for that to happen? You just don't get to pick someone and say, "You! You're going to prison!" Fortunately Trump has left behind himself a mountain of evidence that will be used to convict him. The same cannot be said for some like Obama, who was as squeaky clean as they come. So while they may become a target, there would have to be actual evidence to convict someone of an actual crime, so I don't buy this extrapolation.

Plus if there are actual precedent-setting consequences to illegal presidential behaviour, maybe it would dissuade criminal presidents and their acolytes to begin with.

If Trump pardons himself and the Dems don't even try to prosecute, that would be far more dangerous to them long term then dealing with any potential "payback". Trump pardoning himself without consequence would open the door for the GOP to do far, far worse in the future.

For sure, evidence matters and the lack of it would immediately prevent any future partisan attempts at prosecution of political rivals. As soon as the evidence was there the Republicans dropped the whole Benghazi thing and moved on.

Trump can pardon himself all he likes (until the validity of such is upheld by the judiciary) and avoid FEDERAL prosecution.

He is absolutely hooped at the state level though. I have zero doubt that the AG of New York will have a multitude of charges waiting for Trump when the time comes as an example. Cuomo may even arrange to be there when he is arrested!
