Not if the Tigers sweep the Devil Rays. Or Seattle sweeps the Orioles. Still leaves the Jays the same number of games back.

Considering which of these scenario's is most likely and it points out the trouble the Jays are going to have.

Even if they play great there are still 4 better teams ahead of them that all have to play mediocore or bad.

I am not sure I would bet on this years Tigers team to fold down the stretch.

So inorder to gain 5 games on a team thats going 5-5 every ten games you need to go on a tear of 15-5 just to catch them. Of the 3 teams who are basically in the Wild Card spot...I can only see one of them not playing 500 ball over a 20 game stretch. And I'll send you $50 via pay pal if the Jays are 15-5 in their next 20 games regardless of what the other teams do.
LOL, not going to bet you. The fact is in Baseball they play a tonne of games, therefore any team who gets hot can move up the standings very quickly. All it takes is one hot streak (i.e. going 8-2 or 9-1). If the Jays can sweep the Yanks that would be a great start.

Jays have already gained three games on the Tigers as have the Yank's and the Twins have gained two games. The point is the Tigers and Marniers were way ahead at one point but have fallen back and have put other teams in the race. Sure the Jays need some luck but at least they have a shot at it. Which has not been the case in quite a few years.

Jays current record is 56-54 110 games into the season. They have 52 games left or 5 stretches of 10 games. If they succeed in pulling off a 9-1 run in one of those and they go 6-4 in the other 4 and split the extra two games that will leave them with a record of 90-72 for the season. Conversely the three teams ahead of them Detroit, New York and Seattle all need to finish the year with a record of 28-24 or worse in order for the Jays to catch them. So not only do the Blue Jays have to get red hot....They need 3 other teams to be just above average, plus the Twins, and the Jays also have to play consistant winning baseball the rest of the time. I don't doubt that the Jays could win 9 of 10 or 8 of 10. But I don't think they can put together the other 40 game stretch to go 24-16 after they go on this tear which would have to start today. And with the score 5-3 Yankees in the 7th....it didn't.

They lost the game in the 5th inning when they cashed in only one run with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Then the Yankees took advantage of a crappy 6th inning to score four. *Sigh*

had a shot in the 7th too when rios led off with a single, then wells struck out and frank grounded into the DP. those are the guys that the team need to get it done if they want to go anywhere.

Wells: .239/.290/.418 (708)
Glaus: .240/.331/.404 (735)
Thomas: .241/.353/.416 (769)

That is their numbers against right handed pitching.

Considering 75% of the league or w/e throws right handed, these guys simply pad their stats and molest lefties, but aren't getting it done when it really seems to matter. Having a nice mix of guys who can hit lefties is nice, but really, the way this roster is constructed... it simply isn't balanced.

This is why we are not hitting with runners in scoring position, or getting the hits when we need it.

Also, I'm not sure if you guys have noticed, but my god, Wells isn't making the adjustments he needs to make. Striking out/infield popups on high fastballs or ground out/missing on low/outside breaking balls/sliders. These guys keep pitching him the exact same way, and instead of maybe taking some high fastballs and just sitting/leaning out on say, a slider away and slashing it for a single/double, he just keeps whiffing. It is getting more irritating because he keeps doing it.

high heat in a two strike count, pretty much a sure out either the K or fly out to shallow centre

I know its not Jays related but the D-backs signed Eric Byrnes to a new contract that will pay him 10 mill a season. 10 mill for Eric frickin Byrnes. He is Mr. Hustle but 10 mill for Eric Byrnes? I thought NHL salaries were out of control.

You're seeing the effect of the Vernon Wells contract:

Wells: .285/.333/.485
Byrnes: .268/.329/.457

Those are the career numbers of the 2 players in question, both CFs (Chris Young is better, but you're paying him as a CF, which is why these contracts are comparable), and Byrnes can also swipe bags. He has 28 SBs this year so far, and had 25 last season.

Dunno, 10 mill vs. 17? I'm sure Dback fans were going "wtf" when we signed Vernon too.

I think Stairs was about to lay into A-Rod.

Did Overbay say something to get A-Rod to come after him?

he musta because i'm watching the replay here on the pvr, and a-rod was saying "are you talking to me, are you talking to me?". it was either him or towers, they were standing together.

Well as per usual the Yankees show up in August and tell the Jays to go back to the kiddy table because the grown ups are going to talk. Just shows how far the Jays really are out of being a team with a legitimate shot to contend for a playoff berth.
