It's unlikely to happen, but my dream is that St. Louis wins the Stanley Cup next season with those two playing a part.

Last year, the Blues finished ninth in the conference. The perfect scenario is that they get in, at the expense of the Oilers - highly unlikely, but would be beyond awesome.

Especially if its after they make trades to bolster their lineup and give away another 1st round pick!

Everyone cares about money. Again...Professional Sports isn't a Career, its an opportunity.
Sure, winning is nice, but going home to a mansion in a sweet car is nice too.
The only real question in my mind, and mind you I dont know the answer, is:
Did the Oilers drastically low-ball them or did the Blues drastically over-estimate their value?
I guess we'll see.

Dream scenario:
- Constant badgering of Draisaitl throughout the season but basement bloggers keep claiming Draisaitl is insistent on getting a deal done.
- Oilers trade 2026 1st and more for another aging forward
- Trade deadline passes and tune changes to Draisaitl might go to UFA after all.
- April 8th with 5 games to go, Holloway scores assisted by Broberg to knock the Oilers out of a playoff spot.
- St.Louis makes the playoffs in the WC2 spot.
- The 2025 1st they gave Philly just so they could get their name mentioned on draft day ends up winning one of the lotteries and moves up to #6 or better.
- Draisaitl leaves.
- Fanbase goes unhinged while now having to talk about McDavid's next deal.

The pick is top 12 protected.
Other than that, this sounds like a perfect scenario… and actually quite plausible.

I think that dream dies every time other players look at the Nurse contract.
It's easy to convince aging players chasing a Cup to sign slight discounts as their career is ticking away, but not for players in their prime earning years.

If they get an injury to either goalie they will need to send on of their 20 non-goalies down to the AHL to make cap space to bring up an AHL goalie.
Their cap space is somewhat contingent on not getting many injuries in the first 3-4 months of the year if Kane is getting that surgery. If one of their goalies goes out for any period of time in the first 3-4 months they are effectively down to a 21 man roster. A bad run of injuries and they will be using a 15 man roster like the Flames did when Sutter was GM.
|
They are effectively on a 21 man roster right now. Puckpedia is showing 22 players on the active roster (13-7-2) including Kane. With that is cap space of ~946k, which would translate into ~4m aav cap value available at deadline. But add even their cheapest waivers eligible player and it's less than 200k, which translates into under 1m available at the deadline.
So any one injury puts them at 20 players and if it is a goalie, then there is no option but to call one up meaning goodbye cap space accrual. Multiple injuries and it's into LTIR which would mean they traded Ceci for the cap flexibility of no flexibility at the deadline.

Plus he’s young and he wants to date women without beards, leaving Edmonton allows him to do that.

But if the Oilers were to trade their 2026 first at the deadline, wouldn't the 2025 first have to automatically become unprotected?
Either way, I sincerely hope they push all their chips in this year and it blows up in their face in spectacular fashion

I think the only way they could trade 2026 would be with extra conditions, that if Philly ends up getting 2026 instead of 25, that the 2027 unprotected would be the pick given instead of 2026.

Yes exactly. The cap space flexibility only exists in an injury free world. Two injuries and they are playing games down a man, more than two down more guys. A goalie kills all cap space they have accrued. The cap space only works in almost an injury free world.

The constant narrative is that there is an ekholm-like player out there who can play with nurse.
They aren’t getting that player for league minimum, and even a league minimum player wrecks the other narrative of a $4.5 million player coming in at the deadline without salary leaving.
If these sorts of things are evident to fans of an opposing team, it must be even clearer inside the dressing room.

At some point in time, Nurse will be asked or forced to contract some rare disease ala Hossa, and go on LTIR. It's really the only long term solution as the Oilers try and jam cheap puzzle pieces in to try and fit under the cap each offseason.
And, the window is shut, they may not start as poor as last year but they also aren't going to win 16 in a row or whatever it was. If Vancouver has any sort of backbone, the Oilers were done in 6 in R2 and the narrative, even for the most optimistic mouth breather up there, this summer, wouldn't be any chatter of a return to the Cup, it would be hopefully get to the third round and see what happens.
