Because there are ties even if she denies it. Money, staff, membership lists. They would have had to start all over.

For me the Alberta advantage was real. A top combined tax rate of 39% was huge in terms of attracting investment.
Bill 1 passed by Notely, her first order of business, was to raise the Alberta component from 10% to 15%.
Some will say that’s ancient history but I certainly was not going to trust the NDP when it came to setting fiscal policy for Alberta.

I don't quite get the crowd that says that renaming wouldn't have an effect. The Conservatives are constantly renaming themselves, and washing away the sins of the past.

I didn’t vote NDP, as I don’t trust Notley
She said it herself, its about leadership and trust. So I used that metric.
She panders on health care and charter schools. She cozied up to Trudeau expecting him to help her back, and sure as David Johnson she got used.
I get Smith is her contrast but Notley isn’t some rock solid Lougheed 2.0
To me she is fairly mediocre

Smith is quite evil, and Trudeau is merely a bog standard politician (who I mildly dislike but at the end of the day no more than most politicians).

The post election autopsy for the parties are always telling. The NDP will probably wish they talked more about their platform and less about "being adults in the room" Perhaps not raising the corporate tax rate as that was easily discussed as an issue even though the policy isn't as bad as it's being SOLD.
The UCP will have to figure out a way to bridge the gap between expectations, the rural and urban divide and how to move forward as a united party. Lot's of thinking here

Looking at Calgary NW, there's 1 poll left to report.
NDP is down ~300 votes, Alberta Party has 750

I am a little surprised that only 47% of eligible voters voted. It would be interesting to know the demographics. Maybe the younger voters never made it out.

While it certainly wouldn’t hurt to change names and re-brand I don’t think it would have made a difference. The UCP spin doctors would have found away to continue to link her as nothing more than a Trudeau/Singh puppet and not to be fooled by a new name. Unfortunately a majority of Alberta voters would have bought into that rhetoric and I doubt the result changes. Just my opinion though.

I don’t particularly like either leader, I am just excited about new voices and views in office - it’s that simple IMO.

At least Shandro wasn't elected, I couldn't vote for him in this election.
At the end of the day, the polls never got it right.
while the UCP looks like they're going to lose about 11 seats, but its still a hefty mandate. Its probably the end of Rachel Notley, she had a lot of momentum and really lost it through the election. I don't really think she ran a terrific campaign, none of them did. This was a election based around negativity.
I'm interested in voter turnout, I was surprised today, when I went to vote, it was empty.
The UCP was fairly far ahead on popular vote, and still look to get a big majority.
I think part of it is this. In the last week of so of the election, they bought in Nenshi who went full negative, they bought in Lukasik (sp) and other former Redford Cons who went full negative, and they might have turned off voters.
The NDP can take some comfort in gaining some seats in Calgary, and there are some UCP cabinet members that aren't going back to Edmonton which is a good thing.
But this has to be disappointing for the NDP. I don't know how this province can be bought back together.
