Otherwise, maybe pass and look to a future where you have those three players filtering into the team.
Do you even understand how good Jack Eichel is? Zary and Pelletier are prospects, meaning they will likely not even make it to the NHL, nevermind the fact that both also aren't projected as top line players. I would fire them off in a heartbeat, both of them. Eichel is a generational talent, the same tier as guys like Matthews, Panarin, MacKinnon. He already is that. Not a prospect that may very well wind up being nothing, like most typically do. If it turns out we refused to give up 2 of these prospects, I guarantee you we look back on this and say what the #### were we thinking not doing the deal.

I’m pretty prepared for both outcomes. I’m excited as one can be for this (probably more than a grown ass man should be), but I’m also just pleased we’re pushing this hard and are right there. Sometimes you just lose.

…but it’d be amazing to win this one, at this time, with this coach, and with this goalie.

If it takes those pieces but Kylington over Vali, would you still do it?

If we end up being the destination, I think one current fan favourite is going the other way, whether it be Bread or OK, simply because that will be the cost to outbid Vegas.

The Flames and Vegas have been “finalists” since August,

It’s November.

Maybe Adams called up Francis for GM tips.

Monahan, Dube, Zary, Pelletier, Valimaki, unprotected first, Kylington - not a deal breaker in that group for me.

Coronato - ouch, but OK

Mangiapane - oh boy, really? Then the rest of the package has to get reduced.

But there could well be players and picks coming back from Buffalo too.

For me, Tkachuk moving makes sense for both teams and addresses the lion's share of the salary swap needed. Then you're down to prospects and picks, plus maybe an ok defenceman with upside - all things the Flames can absorb while still icing a competitive team next year.

I'm pretty ambivalent about the trade happening at all, but just have a hard time seeing it based around someone other than Tkachuk on the Flames side of the ledger.

Who knows though - these blockbusters usually surprise.
I don’t see having $19M tied up in two players as a bad thing. This is the way the league is headed.

I don’t think Buffalo would be all that enamoured with Tkachuk’s contract status. I imagine he would be a strong flight risk. Especially for a team that is in Buffaloes position. That alone would scare me if I were Buffalo. They’re going to want young controllable assets, not guys who could walk at the end of next year. At least not the primary piece in the return, which Tkachuk certainly would be.

It has been reported that Buffalo will not retain salary, but will take a contract back with one or two years remaining. My Gawd, is that Sean Monahan’s music??
As for the young controllable assets, BUF can take two of Zary, Pel, Valamaki, Coronato, Dube and a 1st.

I heard he didn’t show up at Dealy Plaza today because he’s on the Stars road trip. We’ll see him Thursday.

What about this...?

Monahan is traded somewhere.... like Vegas for Krebs. VGK kinda needs NHL veterans right now and may be desperate enough to get that player.

Not sure what they money looks like for any of the teams in this scenario.

Maybe Buffalo has to take him to stay above the cap floor, or maybe they dont need all of his salary to maintain the floor and they flip him somewhere else for a less expensive contract that still keeps them above the floor.

Just throwing spitballs at the wall late at night to see what sticks.

I think the flames will be trying hard to get this done without giving up Dube or Mangiapane. I imagine Monahan has to be part of the trade for cap reasons unless they do the trade in two parts to allow Buffalo to put eichel on LTIR and remain above the cap. If Monahan is moved, the flames need a center to take his place for the season. I think they really don’t want to lose Dube since they would then be without two of their centres that have some offensive upside for 3-4 months while they wait for eichel to get healthy. I bet they are much more willing to trade Valimaki instead since they have lots of extra defensemen.

So I think they will try to compensate by either adding picks and/or prospects to the deal.

Valimaki
Zary/Coronato
Pelletier
2022 1st round pick (unprotected)
2023 1st round pick (conditional)
Monahan (possibly to a third team such as Ottawa or even Vegas)

Conditions on the 2023 pick: if eichel puts up 70+ points in 2022-2023, it’s a first round pick (top 3 protected), if not, it’s a 2nd round pick + a 3rd round pick.

I think giving Buffalo both Zary and Pelletier and potentially an extra first round pick in 2023 more than makes up for not giving them Dube. Of course, it all comes down to Vegas… if they go all in with their offer then Treliving will likely have to include Dube as well.
