It seems like the director actively tried to push away his audience. The first one had an audience who showed up for the nihilistic angry vibes.....so let's make a musical....co-starring Lady Gaga....?

I can kind of see why he went that way, to further explore the idea of the delusional television appearances. This seems like a vanity piece, and someone should have just stopped Todd Phillips. He could have kept the same general idea and just toned down the musical elements. You've got a movie that fans of musicals aren't going to like and a musical that fans of the first Joker movie aren't going to like.

My understanding of this was Phillips and Phoenix didn’t want to do it but got a dump truck full of money. So it’s less on someone stopping Phillips and more studios shouldn’t demand sequals from people who don’t want to make them.

I can't figure out whether Phillips just straight up didn't want to do this film and made the movie unlikable on purpose or if he was just upset with some of the fanbase the previous movie had attracted and wanted to spite those people specifically.

7 million dollar second weekend for Joker. What an unmitigated disaster this is for Phillips/Warner's. This is the kind of movie that can kill careers. An 82% drop, the worst of all time (tops Marvels 78% drop). Certainly it'll be the biggest drop for a movie sequel in history as well.
