Yes it's his right, and yes they should have got it in writing obviously. That's the point, they obviously thought he would be true to his word and left themselves open to be screwed, and he then he had a change of heart and screwed them.
It was his right to do that, but it's certainly understandable that they might be bitter about it.

Interesting thought I just heard on the NHL Network... could Iggy be the captain for Team Canada at the Olympics if he doesn't get an NHL contract?

This is exactly what I'm hoping for. Iginla signs a one day contract and retires a Calgary Flame and then captains Team Canada at the Olympics

I'm hoping he signs a 1 year contract with Calgary, wins a Cup and rides off into the sunset after the Parade, sitting on the back of a red convertible with one arm around the Cup and all you see his the silhouette. Never to be seen or heard from ever again. Becomes a folk legend in Alberta and hockey circles around the world. And when we are old and grey we tell our grand kids of the magical 2017-2018 season.
But that's just me.

Yeah I think they didn't think they had to get it in writing and that even asking him for it would be an insult to him.
Iggy had already severely impacted his trade value by having such a small number of approved teams, thus preventing the Flames from creating a bidding war.
As was his right with a NTC, but it also speaks to the fact that 12's #1 priority was 12.

IIRC there were rumours that Crosby gave Iggy a call.

The Pens were also on a double digit winning streak and had just added Brenden Morrow. I could see how Iggy zeroed in on the Pens at that time. The organization can be mad at him but ultimately the fiasco lands on Feaster.

His priority was winning a cup. Obviously he picked the wrong team, but it's not like he just walked from Calgary to get more money.

If someone has integrity, then their word should enough. Yeah, legally speaking, they should have had Iginla sign an official waiver form, but they obviously over judged his character when they didn't think it would be necessary.
So Feaster's "fault" I suppose, but Iginla basically waved his middle finger at the franchise on his way out.

What a load of crap. Questioning the integrity of one of the classiest players in the league for making a decision about his future career / family is beyond asinine.
He was told he wasn't going to be re-signed and had the option to go wherever he felt he'd best have a shot at wining a cup. I'm sure it was a difficult time and decision, and he had every right to change his mind if he hadn't signed off on anything. I can completely see how a phone call from Crosby and the Penguin's run changed his mind.
The way a few people in the fan base try to spin that as him purposely screwing the team over is a massive reach... and this tiresome topic is honestly as played out as debating the Jankowski draft pick.
I get that it's summer, but the fact this thread has devolved to this tired, old debate is really sad.

Nobody is saying he purposely screwed the team. I don't think anybody thinks that. As you say, his purpose was to try to win a cup, and he made the decision he thought was best for himself / his family in order to achieve that goal.
In the process, he also reneged on a verbal agreement.
It can be both things.

Iginla left money on the table for years to have a NTC included in his deal. He exercised his NTC so now he has "no integrity"? Get real

Find me a quote where someone thinks that Iginla's purpose (your word) -- i.e., his objective, i.e. his primary consideration -- was to screw the Calgary Flames.

Its not that he exercised his NMC, its the way he exercised it.
"Sure i will accept a trade....to one of these 4 teams"
Flames make a deal with one of those teams...
"No wait, just pittsburgh please"

Questioning his integrity, suggesting he screwed the team and a "waived his middle finger" are all part of what I'm talking about.
A skewed, off kiltered slant on the situation that a select few have convinced themselves of.
It's the same group of people every time this tired, played out topic comes up.

Whether or not he meant to, and I personally think he didn't mean to, he screwed the team.
He agreed to a trade and then backed out out of self-interest. I think it's fine to question someone's integrity who does that. You and I might come to different conclusions whether that has any effect on his integrity, and how much. You rightly point out that he has earned a lot of respect for other things he has done. For some people, that trumps the trade thing. For others, it doesn't.
I don't think you have to be so upset with people who think differently than you. It's not "asinine". It's coming to a different conclusion based on the same evidence. Reasonable people can reasonably disagree. Try it some time.
(I don't know what "waived his middle finger at the team" means exactly, particularly (but maybe it's a double entendre in this context) as it should be "waved", but whatever.)
