I did some research and they are all good suggestions.. but I think the Imperial Assault will appeal to us most. Looking for more of a board game vs. a card game (what is the difference right?) I also like the fact that there is a strong co op campaign mode. Now to find it at a decent price.

Few buddies and I are looking to get into some entry level board gaming. We like the comic book stuff, star wars, fantasy etc... dnd seems like it might be a bit to intense for us. This would be a casual one Saturday night a month type session.
Any recommendations for that?
RISK Legacy
A campaign without the intense rules, or background work. Starts out easy, and builds up in a way that allows everyone to learn the changes as it happens. Also, it's loads of fun.

We played some X-Wing at lunch today - fantastic battle.
I was rebels: 2 Xwings - (Biggs and Wedge) and 1 B-Wing (Ten Numb)
co-worker was Imperial: 2 Tie Interceptor (Soontir Fel and Avenger Squadron) and 1 Firespray (Krassis Trelix)
Total destruction by my rebels squadron. Took out Soontir in one shot from Biggs - penned in the other Tie Interceptor and took him out with Biggs again - then chipped away at the firespray before sealing the deal with a massive 4 hit barrage from my B-Wing.
Great way to spend a lunch hour!!

Got the Terra Mystica Fire & Ice expansion for Christmas. Got a few people getting together tomorrow to play it. Hopefully get in a couple games of that and one or two of Caverna.
Only played a few on those lists, but wow, didn't think Splendor was so good that it deserves game-of-the-year votes. It was kinda simple and forgettable for me.
But I do think that Castles of Mad King Ludwig looks like a lot of fun and I may pick it up soon.
I find Diplomacy to be a bad game to play live. First it can take forever, and making deals with people with no real privacy doesn't really work. Playing on the above site allow people to have days or weeks in between moves to give time for players to plan.

I have seen the strongest personality in the room suffocate a game of Diplomacy. And a few hurt feelings.
Diplomacy is not the kind of game you should play with people who get hurt feelings from games.
In any case, I recently bought the deckbuilding game Star Realms, and would highly recommend it. One deck makes for a good two player game, if you buy a second deck you can play with 3-4, third deck and it's 5-6 players.
Plays more straightforward than Dominion, and is IMO easier to learn. It's quite refreshing to play a good old "last man standing" combat game, but one that is streamlined to be mechanically as good as anything you'd expect from modern board game. After all, so many modern board games these days are either co-op or tend to have this "multiplayer solitaire" feel to them.
My wife wouldn't let me play Diplomacy live anymore because my friends would tell her what an awful person I am. They were mostly kidding, but she got pretty tired of hearing it.
Looks like it's hard to find and massively back ordered - finding a copy won't be helped by Wil Wheaton making it the next game on his tabletop webcast.
I'm sure its been discussed and mentioned more than once but I can't be bothered to back more than two pages.. Settlers of Catan is always a go- to. I've attempted to learn the 2 player game which is a rigorous setup but fun game.

If you haven't found it already, there is a good version for tablets. No set-up required.
