To me, they should say found when they've found them, not when they've been spotted by a satellite 600 km away. Might help with the false alarms.

The Australian-led search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight has had an apparent breakthrough, with satellite images showing two objects in waters off Perth.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Parliament on Thursday afternoon that an Australian P-3 Orion aircraft had been diverted to check out the objects and would be followed by other planes.
The first Orion was due to arrive on the scene about 2pm, he said.
Mr Abbott stressed it was not yet clear whether they were parts of the plane.

This is off the coast of Perth, Aus.
The plane sure deviated far, if this is the wreckage. But also, it's been almost 2 weeks and the current would carry wreckage a ways from where the crash would've actually been. Taking that into account, it was very likely right on the southern arc that they predicted. Still a very, very long ways off from where it should've been.

What in God's name is it doing way down there. Wow.
Interesting tweets: "Initial reaction on Chinese social media re #MH370: "Hope it's not true." Hijack theory had given some hope of survivors," "Big flurry of activity on the WeChat group Chinese #MH370 passenger families have set up. Telling each other to keep calm."

That is seriously in the middle of nowhere. What a remote, remote location.

Let's say there was a fire onboard. Would the following make any sense:
- Descend to 24,000 feet.
- Pilots put on oxygen masks
- Pilots disengage the passenger mask oxygen flow. (You'll see why in a moment.)
- Decompress the cabin to attempt to control the fire. (Like in the Val Kilmer Mars movie.) The reason to disengage the passenger oxygen is to not provide oxygen for the fire.
- Turns out the pilots shut off all oxygen including their own; leading them to suffer from hypoxia.
- Autopilot flies the plane on last course until fuel runs out.
Even remotely possible?
|
Hi Ken,
Remotely possible, yes, highly unlikely, definitely.
There is a procedure to partially decompress the cabin in order to facilitate the removal of smoke/fumes, but even then it isn't completely de pressurized...since you would risk killing everybody by doing it (edit: I see you descended to 24000', so you probably wouldn't kill anyone). As mentioned, there are 2 separate O2 systems, one for flight deck and other for passengers. Also, it would be very difficult to stop the cabin O2 system....there is a switch to turn it on manually, but no switch to prevent it from working.
So basically they would have to do a completely inappropriate and unpublished procedure, and both find a way to prevent the O2 generators in the back from working in addition to somehow and unluckily having their own system failing separately.
So theoretically possible, but the odds of those occurring would be worse than random meteorite strike.
Also, to a few people that think that catastrophic fire is the most plausible....for the sequence of events to unfold as they have been reported, it seems highly unlikely. As others have said, for a fire that is severe enough to knock out several important systems and yet allow the airplane to fly for several hours....anything is possible, but it is also statistically remote compared to some type of intentional sabotage.

If this is it, in Aussie waters so will likely get a more efficient SAR and investigation, and better idea of what happened from unbiased "western" investigators, not crooked Malaysian government types trying to turn it into a further internal political affair.

It's annoying how accurate this post could potentially be... what a farce this has been.

. @WrightUps from Navy P-8 search plane: "We are just descending through clouds right now ... about 1,300 miles southwest of Australia."
@wrightups says the US Navy P-8 is basically in the search area now - beginning initial search - heading toward the South Pole.

And again... they've got the best equipment in the world on that P-8. If there's anything there that can be found, the P-8 will find it. I really want this to be it.

It seriously is starting to look like they were attempting a trip to Antarctica.
So strange. If there's a fire/problem and you're looking for a place to land, you've passed every possible place by that point.
If terrorists, why the South Indian Ocean?
Mysterious to say the least.

I think it's more seeming like the fire enough to incapacitate, but not debilitate the plane was likely. Then autopilot to it's doom. Not sure how the course diverted again after the initial turnback though.
