lol I love how bent out of shape people get over this player; he’s worth a claim alone to try and get to the Wranglers as it would be the shot in the arm that team needs after being depleted the last while and Phillips was a great scorer for the Wranglers. It would not be a waste of time to claim him at all imo.

If he's heading to the AHL anyway, may as well be a Wrangler.
I wouldn't say he didn't want to be here, he chose term and the one way deal. Can't blame him for that.
Wranglers are short. What the heck? (and I don't see him as an NHL player)

If we claim him he has to stay with the NHL club or get on waivers again to send down. In which case the Caps likely claim him back to send down

If you claim him he is in the NHL, or clearing waivers again to go to the AHL. Pointless if you are doing it for the AHL.

If you claim him the Caps may want to shed the contract (50 max) and the player with a one way contract paid to play in the AHL.
He may be assignable.

now if he DOES get through waivers, maybe the caps do us and him a solid and flip him to us for another AHLer/late rounder/future considerations

I'd claim him just for the March 18th game when the Caps are in town. Phillips is 100% when it comes to scoring against former teams.

Yea but everyone in here thinks he’s ahl fodder anyways? If we claim him is there another team out there that claims him that’s ahead of us? Doubtful; if he ended up getting claimed when we tried to assign him so be it. Such is the life of a tweener.

I don't think that Phillips has enough skill to make it in the NHL in a top 6 role, and he obviously doesn't have enough to offer in a bottom 6 role. Maybe he continues working hard and continues developing, and over the next few years he comes back into the NHL like Ryan. Not out of the question, but I don't think he has the skill level to be an effective point producer on any team.
What he can be very good for is an NHL team. I think Pelletier, for instance, developed a little bit better because he had Phillips to play with in his rookie season. I do think that players like Phillips who are at best, NHL tweeners, but have good off-ice habits and have an above level of skill make for good line-mates to help develop young prospects.

It’s worth the paperwork no? Phillips has been sitting pretty much I’m sure he’d like the activity and to just get playing again.

Meh, why bother. Ship has sailed and if he can't even make it in with the Caps, he's not gonna make it with the Flames. Even Pelletier made it with Sutter at the helm. Let the Coyotes claim him. LOL

If you're small you need to at least be very fast IMO
Phillips is small and a below average skater, not a great recipe for an NHL forward.
I still hope he becomes a Wrangler ringer in the near future, but I'm sure he'll still chase the NHL dream.
