Pretty much. When Jeff Goldblum cant stammer his way to a little bit of fun? You in for a rough ride.

In retrospect though, if they'd just held off on the release of ID42 or whatever...getting a Will Smith cameo where he bitchslaps an Alien? Now that would have sold tickets!

Wait, I did watch Independence Day 2. I think I wiped it from my memory in an act of mental self-defense.

My review?

Not a fair comparison, but B-movies, especially in the horror genre, always run the risk of being terrible. My favorite B horror movie is Manos: the Hands of Fate. I actually had to learn about it by watching MST3K ages ago. I present to you the trailer. Be fairly warned. This is a truly bad movie.

Oh....Torgo....

And now for the palette cleanser.

So much talk of terrible movies, but sometimes film gets it right and creates magic. *sigh* Such beauty.

I still think the Elephant Love Medley from Moulin Rouge is probably my favourite musical number from a movie of all time, but that scene is great.

I'm not a huge fan of musicals and I didnt think La La Land was all that great, again, that seemed to me a big 'Hollywood Fart-Sniffer.'

Les Miserables however? Now there was an amazing film!

You're speaking my language. My favorite musical of all time, but it had great source material to create that gravitas.

If you ever want to question your own morality or sense of right and wrong, just read the chapter in Victor Hugo's masterpiece where he questions what he should do when an innocent man is accused of his crimes. For the Cliff notes, here's a clip.

Its one of my absolute favourites. I have a full unabridged copy in my nightstand that I've read more than a number of times, I've been to the Operas and seen the movie adaptations.

Just...what a story. I love almost every iteration of it. It is so deep, there are so many incredible Moral Dilemmas.

For instance, is Javert really a bad guy? He's doing a hard job in a hard time as best he can and when the morality of his actions contradict what he sees as his ironclad duty and he's stuck between an unstoppable force and an immovable object?

Its brilliant stuff. I love it. It really plumbs the depth of humanity and moral conundrums.

Anyways...thats a bit of a tangent.

Do we need to make our own Les Miserables book/musical/movie thread? No Spoilers!!!

Javert is the most tragic character ever. His unflappable belief in right and wrong in a grey and nuanced world does him in. It's compelling.

I just watched the first season of Peaky Blinders, and I swear that Sam Neill's character was a rehash of Javert. Classic characters last forever.

Damn you! Now I'm going down the Les Mis rabbit-hole on Youtube!

The original 1985 London cast recording is on Spotify, I guess that's what I'm listening to tomorrow at work.

I enjoyed Love Lies Bleeding but not as much as I expected to if I'm being honest. It's clearly a movie with ideas and takes some big swings but I don't think they all connected. The last third or so really brought things down for me.

I do think one of the strengths of the film is the cast though. Right down to Jena Malone and Dave Franco.

I'm not sure I'd label it an erotic thriller though. But maybe it's reputation of that is more an inditement of the sexlessness of most cinema these days.

All that being said I think Rose Glass is one of the move interesting filmmakers out there. Between this and St. Maud she's definitely a director I'm following now.

The moment in The Nice Guys where Kim Basinger's character offers Ryan Gosling's character a mint is one of the most hilarious comedic exchanges of the past decade. The entire scene is so subtle, and Russell Crowe's nod just tops it off.

I saw Les Mis back when I was quite young (think i was like 11 or 12) and have loved it ever since. However I still don't think the movies are that great compared to the stage shows. I think because the music is such a big part of the dialogue that the stage performers pull it off better than the movie actors.

I am also now re-listening to the 10th anniversary concert. Such a great cast and its who I keep judging every other performance on.

I'm not really going to get into which is better, plays or movies or books, etc.

I loved the new movie. LOVED it. Crowe is not a great singer, but what he bring is passion and passion is what Les Mis is all about.

I love the story. Frankly, I dont think I've seen or experienced a rendition of it that made me think: "That was crap."

Because if you're an artist of any kind, singer, musician, actor, whatever, and you're signing on to Les Mis, you're bringing your 'A-Game.'
