But for the reasons I'm gathering people walking out of PT for, it definitely is an indictment in my mind too.

I don't know what people expect when they watch the trailer and look at the advertising for the film, or have even a vague knowledge of the director and his past work.

I don't know why middle aged adults would approach a movie like this with the sensitivity of a mormon grandmother. It's not your first time at the rodeo, and we all know you've looked at worse on your computer.
I don't think any of the trailers really revealed much of the story at all. I had no idea what it was about going in, just that I like Stone and the visuals looked interesting. Again, other people just have different sensibilities. You might watch porn, but maybe aren't comfortable with watching it with a room full of people, or maybe even family members or friends you went to see it with.

Personally, what made me uneasiest wasn't the nudity itself, but that we were basically watching some form of pedophilia...maybe? I think that feeling was part of the point of the whole movie (particularly the beginning). I can see why some people might not want to sit in that feeling.

Also some people just don't have the imagination to enjoy films like that. They can't get past the bubble burps and boobies to enjoy something a bit more subversive than what they tend to intake. I couldn't convince my dad that Everything Everywhere All At Once was a good movie. He just can't see through absurdity.

But yeah I don't really get leaving a theatre. You paid (a lot) have your popcorn etc...sitting there, went to the theatre, you might as well get through the whole thing so you can see where it goes?

Saw the Poor Things discussion and wanted to chime in having watched it a week or two ago.

I really enjoyed it. It was funny, beautiful, and well-performed. It also did a much better job at portraying feminist coming of age than barbie and definitely deserves the accolades

Dune is real. You can’t convince me this is not a dramatic retelling of real space history.

One genre of movie that I Iove is the classic Hollywood epic....I'm talking 3+ hrs, lavish sets, romance, an intermission, beautiful costumes and a historical setting. I've seen movies like Lawrence of Arabia, 10 Commandments, Doctor Zhivago, but one that never seems to get mentioned is the 1971 film Nicholas and Alexandra. I actually first watched this in school and found it only decent (partially because there was a test on it after and that's no way to enjoy cinema). Watching it 20 years later (I'm getting old) , I absolutely loved it. The movie is centered around the last Czar in Russia Nicholas II and his relationship with his family, and particularly his wife that he maybe loved too much, as well as his duty to his country and it's citizens. It also has Rasputin and his insane antics, and the captain from Super Troopers is in it. I'm not sure exactly how historically accurate it is, but as a film it's riveting, and a big recommend from me.

If anyone else has any forgotten Hollywood epics that they think I should check out please give me suggestions.

The Ten Commandments is, imo, the greatest movie ever made. Heston obviously is great but Yul Brenner, Anne Baxter, Peter G Robinson and Vincent Price all give legendary performances. I know you already mentioned it. But it’s worth mentioning again.

Otherwise I like Cleopatra, despite its terrible reviews. Elizabeth Taylor was a total smoke show.

Barabas is great, about the guy who was pardoned when Jesus was crucified.

Also Spartacus, Quo Vadis and The 300 Spartans.

Once Upon a Time In The West is exactly this.

Watched 'The Pianist' last night. 10/10... what a brutal movie. As someone with Polish relatives, it gave me a newfound appreciation.

FWIW, back when they were new, I watched all The Pacific series with my college buddies who loved it, and told them after that they HAVE to watch Band of Brothers as it's even better. One of them did and said he thought Pacific was better. Maybe you just had to watch it at the time and it's aged a bit.

I personally loved BOB for the record (and preferred it to Pacific), I had a man-crush on Lt. Winters.

Nadal, looking at epics that aren't westerns...

Bridge over the river Kwai is a good one.

It's not 'classic', but has that same feel... Troy, Alexander and Kingdom of Heaven. Although only the director's cuts of each. The theatrical cuts neutered the movies, and ruined the 'epic' resurgence.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have Cleopatra it's been on my watchlist for a while so it might be my next epic watch. With it being a Fox picture I highly doubt Disney will put it out on 4K so Blu Ray it is. I remember picking this one up when HMV was going under so I only paid like $5 for it, which is a steal now.

Also 10 Commandments is an awesome film, I actually really liked the animated Prince of Egypt as well. It's got a stacked cast and amazing animation. Not as good as 10 Commandments but solid nonetheless.

Bridge Over the River Kwai watched last year and absolutely loved it. That ending is so cold. David Lean put out 3 of the best films ever all in a row.

Have you seen Wim Wenders's "Until the End of the World"? I highly recommend it.

Not epics in the way Lawrence of Arabia is, but The Longest Day, The Great Escape, A Bridge Too Far and The Magnificent Seven are all big stories with big casts with big names.

You might like Sound of Metal as well if you haven't seen it.

Almost through episode 2… does something happen soon, ‘cause this is pretty boring so far.

There are some genres that lend themselves well to epics. War films, I would add the uncut Big Red One. Westerns, the Searchers. Samurai, check out some of the criterion collection. Kurasawa, the samurai trilogy and hidden fortress.

Dune was ####ing incredible. My god what a spectacle. On par with Interstellar levels of amazing for me.

That thump thump thump in IMAX is just heart pounding. Gah so good.
