Can't be taking on bad contracts until after they put some shovels in the ground for the new arena...makes sense.

Establishing himself as a C would probably be a good thing for Pospisal’s NHL career in the long run. But agreed that it would been as a demotion if he’s getting 9 min a game or something. Hopefully Huska will roll the lines next season.

And there will be injuries. Safe to say Pospisal would be the first player promoted from the 4th line.

I think Pageau is a great target to take back a bad deal. He's still a decent player, can play middle 6 center, and the isles always feel like they want to compete now but are never a contender. Getting a pick back for taking his contract could end up being a solid asset pickup

I feel like its Kotkaniemi. With Kuznetsov leaving, moving Kotkaniemi would free up plenty of space to sign Drury, Necas, and bring in Laine on a retained contract from Columbus to hopefully find chemistry with Aho.

I keep seeing people suggest that the Canes need to move money out to sign Necas, Jarvis and Drury. They have plenty of room to sign all of them. Why would they move out a 24 year old center who is signed long term at sub 5 mil?

Well, the post you quoted gave 1 possible reason that I think is interesting.

Kotkaniemi was a pretty big mistake and it would not surprise me if they wanted to flush him. Trying to assign and then extract value out of a contract like that seems basically impossible though.

But I'll give it a shot. I think he's about 1.5 overpaid over the course of a 6 year term equals 9 million total. Calgary is taking on the risk so there's no asset value going Carolina's way even in a world where the cap hit is appropriate. So, that's simply 9 mill of cap space bought... A first and a third should do it.

Kotkaniemi + 1st + 3rd for Walker Duer.

Sure, that all makes sense. But they don't need to move out Kotkaniemi. They have enough cap to easily sign their RFA's without moving out any money.

I'd take Kotkaniemi without a sweetener for future considerations.

A young center signed long term at what is a reasonable amount for a re-building team, in a rising cap world.

That would be the perfect "cap dump" acquisition.

The thing that needs to be considered here is simply this: kotkaniemi blows.

That's why they want to get rid of him and that's why he needs a sweetener.

He has one season with 18G, 43P(0.52PPG) compared to Bennett's 18G, 36P(0.47PPG). They both hovered around the 12-13 minute mark on good teams, Kotkoniemi is mostly(4 of 6 seasons) in the 29-35 point pace, while Bennett was mostly(3 of 4.5) in the 26-31 point pace with Calgary.

KK is better defensively and takes less stupid penalties. Bennett was great in the playoffs, was pretty good at laying the body, and was good at fighting.

The fact that KK is 24 and already has 6 seasons in the NHL, with almost 400GP, makes me think that he will soon figure things out. Especially with a coach that increases his minutes and trusts him in all situations. It's definitely risky, especially if Rod the Bod has a reason for not giving him more of an opportunity.

Kotkaniemi’s draft pedigree hurts his reputation at this point. But forget about where he was drafted, and he’s a pretty decent player. 24 years old C with good size and a reliable two-way game. He’s not even hugely overpaid for what he brings. And the Canes don’t have prospects knocking at the door who can step in right away and bring what he brings, so I doubt they’re interested in moving him anyway.

My "thanks" are all over the place. KK seems terrible then i see Gvitaly's post and think, not totally terrible. I'm easily swayed. Just seems like a long time for a guy that might be replacement level if he doesn't take a step.

Super interesting if true. If draft played out in similar fashion to Bob's list meaning Buium is gone by 12, then the Wild were choosing Mcgroarty over the some combo of Helenius, Catton, Yak, Eiserman, or Senecke being available at 12.

This is exactly it.

The Canes need him at 2/3C.
They don't need additional cap space.
So I don't see why they would have any desire to move him out.
The Flames would happily take him given their lack of NHL centers.

Thing is he doesn't really blow. His production decline this past season was largely on-ice shooting percentage driven.

21-22: 16.4%
22-23: 12.2%
23-24: 9.01%

Let's look at his 5v5 stats for his 3 years in Carolina:

59.5% Corsi For
56.7% xGF
54.1% GF
7.7% Shooting Percentage
.913 Save Percentage
0.990 PDO

1.75 Points Per 60 (7th)
0.77 Goals Per 60 (5th)
0.98 Assists Per 60 (11th)
12.1% Shooting Percentage

That's better than Bennett was his last three years in Calgary, and he was also 24 the season he was traded:

51.9% Corsi For
51.9% XGF
44.4% GF
7.2% on-ice shooting
.909 Save Percentage
.981 PDO

1.43 Points Per 60
0.68 Goals Per 60
0.75 Assists Per 60
9.1% Shooting Percentage

Similar to Bennett in that poor on-ice shooting and save percentage seemed to be limiting his overall production to that point. The one big difference is that Kotkaniemi's own shooting percentage is quite good, even though his on-ice still remains low, meaning it might be more an issue with his teammates finishing.

He's only 24 and locked up for $4.8M x 4 years...honestly I have no issue with that contract at all for where this team is the next 4 years and even if he doesn't improve and he tops out as a 40 point guy it's fine.

People seem so willing to give up a 2nd and $4M AAV to offersheet somebody like Dylan Holloway...who is less proven and only a year younger and doesn't even play center.

When the Hurricanes were rumoured to be heavily shopping him before the draft and free agency they should have been all over it.

I don’t mind KK, I just hate the term. Would prefer 1-2 year cap dumps. Willing to take on KK at a price.
