Give the spot to another kid. Our top nine is full.
Hubey lindholm Shariganovich
Dube Kadri Coronato
Mangiapane Backlund Coleman
Duehr
Id say we have no place for him.

I’d sooner take a flyer on some like Patrick because he’s still quite young than I would on Kessel. Heck if we went for a vet I’d like Stastny because he can take reps at center and didn’t look out of place in the bottom 6 last year with the canes.

Agreed, Stastny can fit in anywhere.

Patrick as in Nolan Patrick?
He isn’t playing hockey anymore.

I don't think I see Kessel dressing for more than 20 games next season. If he embraces a Jagr role of essentially another coach I could be okay with it.
Derek Stepan(retired), Paul Stastny, and Zack Parise are more interesting options for the 4th line. Bear could be an interesting option on D. I doubt we ever see either Kane or Toews in a Flames uniforms but both of them can be great mentors for younger players IMO. Kane is actually a perfect fit for the PP as well.
Long story short, I don't think the Flames will sign any of the remaining free agents/PTOs. If we do something I expect it to be via the trade route.

Fairly surprised the Ducks haven't managed to sign Zegras yet...
Apparently word is the Ducks offered him a 3yr $12mil bridge deal that Zegras turned down.
And rumor is three teams have made a trade offers to the Ducks for him, Sabres were mentioned as one of the teams.
Strongly doubt the Flames would be able to land him so this doesn't really impact us but just find it interesting when a good player, popular with the fans misses training camp/preseason.

I've heard a few insiders talk about how Verbeek is a "grinder' when it comes to contracts. I assume that's what's going on behind the scenes.

Even with Pelletier's injury - and even assuming the worst (knock on wood of course) that it is a season long injury - I think there is enough depth in talent left rather than sign a UFA that is still available. The only 'need' on the team right now is toughness I guess, as I am already starting to worry about match-ups vs the grease, but I definitely do think there is enough skill to play in the NHL, even if some sheltering is required.
Zary looks like a kid who is ready to take another step again. I think after his showing in last year's camp/preseason and how his season went last year, and his showing so far this year - this is a kid who may not be quite ready for an NHL spot, but should get some NHL games this year as part of his development.
Klapka - I hope he stops fighting, quite honestly, and I hope that this isn't the role that he feels he needs to take. I think he would be a good player on the 4th line in an energy role, and he does try to make good plays. I still think that with his combination of size, skill and skating ability, that he would make an EXCELLENT pk'er and even shutdown player. I think he has the tools to be a beast in this role given the proper coaching, direction and reps. I am not writing off his offence as he does have some good hands as well, but I do feel that he could be an elite shut-down player who can function as someone who smothers a particular opponent all night, or even acting as a 'disruptor' killing plays.
Rooney - I think he has been good. I would rather he doesn't get a spot on the roster to be honest, as I would rather that spot go to a player that will continue to develop, but I would rather have Rooney filling in that time than signing a UFA.
Hunt - he has been good and probably is close (if not already) earning a spot. Any arguments by anyone?
There are other guys that can fit roles for what I would think would be a handful of games anyway - Stromgren in a strictly 4th line role forechecking comes to mind. I don't think he is NHL ready yet, but I do think he can be fine for stretches as a 4th line forechecker, as long as the 4th line is being sheltered (better on home games obviously).
I would just prefer the Flames start the season with what they have. I don't want a Kessel. Not that the Flames can even make it happen, but I wouldn't even want a Kane on this team. Spots were open to be earned, and I think there have been prospects earning them. I would rather those spots not be blocked-off and sending the wrong message.

With Pelletier out, I am hoping Klapka gets the spot. Would LOVE to see both Duehr AND Klapka on the 4th line. Might also provide enough speed and physical play to allow Zary to center them.
Huberdeau - Lindholm - Sharagovich
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coronato
Dube - Kadri - Coleman
Klapka - Zary - Duehr
decent speed and size

Your lineup needs Ruzi in there, he’s showing too capable and size alone will get him into the starting lineup but he’s also been productive so far this preseason.
A line of Klapka - Ruzicka - Duehr could be an absolute menace for the opposition to handle.

Hasn't Zary out produced Ruzicka in camp? IMO. Even with last n8ght performance, Roz is behind zary in terms of competition

Didn't forget him, and he probably gets the spot, but I wanted to say that, with Klapka and Duehr both on the line, I wouldn't mind if Zary got it, or at least got some time there.
Though I have to say, I like the idea of Klapka - Ruzicka - Duehr as well. The wingers wreak havoc, and Ruzicka provides some savvy

Consistency effort in play has and will always be his knock. He's got all the tools outside the toolbox but can't put them together.

Zary was 37% in the dot last game and Ruzi was 53%; he’s yet to score but he has 3 assists with some being primary and like I said Ruzi has the size to play down the lineup and on the 4th line. Zary has looked great too, but I think he’s better suited right now playing big top 6 minutes in the A to continue his upwards trend.

Having Zary subbing in for Ruzicka periodically (to keep a fire under his butt) isn't the worst plan.
