I look completely able bodied but there have been times I needed to take an elevator 1 floor. My counter is you have no idea if the person you're getting gear ground about can't take the stairs.
Sometimes I'm lazy as all hell and just don't feel like walking, but health issues are a thing.
And to be honest, sometimes I taken the elevator 1 floor on purpose just to piss off the people who get their gears ground by it. It's a gg I have little sympathy for.
I bet everyone who complains about a person going only 1 floor has many times themselves taken an elevator when they could just as easily taken the stairs the 1-4 floors they had to go. kind of invalidates the complaint when they're lazy too.
Know what's a more legit gear grinder than someone taking the elevator 1 floor? The people who get on the elevator without waiting for people to get off. they're the #######s.

It grinds my gears that the "close door" buttons on elevators don't work in North America. So much wasted time.
You press that thing in Japan and it responds immediately. No ####ing around.

There are a lot of office and condo buildings where you need keycards to move between specific floors. That’s a lot easier to navigate in the elevator. Also, as stated, lots of buildings don’t leave the stairwell doors unlocked from the inside so while it’s easy to get into the stairwell (like if there’s a fire), there is no guarantee you’re exiting anywhere except the ground floor.
Now if we’re talking about a hotel with some grand staircase and there’s no risk of getting stranded in a stairwell, maybe there is a case to be made for not taking an elevator up one floor.

Worse than taking an elevator one floor is some poster's reactions to the gear grinder.

I have no problem with passive-aggressive blocking people when they pull that on the ctrain.
Also the people who will budge ahead to get on the train from one door, and then slowly take their sweet time moving down the aisle to get a seat; meanwhile people who came in from the other door are are swarming in filling up the available seats.

I’m not sure I’ve been in an elevator where the close door button doesn’t work.

The 'Close Door' button on the elevator in my building reduces the wait time from roughly five seconds to about three seconds. However you have to wait two seconds for the button to become active when you first get on. So you press the floor, hit the close door button, but until the 'ding' noise happens, the close door button isn't yet active.

My close door button on the office elevator activates as soon as the door has fully opened. I've got the timing down perfectly. We work above a company that has no internal staircase in their multi-floor office (we have two, one on each side of each floor) so it's really quite annoying to use the elevators with all the stops and starts... I can get on the elevator by myself and push the button for my floor, and end up making six stops before I get there due to people getting on and off. It adds up over time.
Separate gear grinder: misleading sales. E-mail from Harry Rosen for example, right now: up to 50% off Canali items! *goes and checks...* yep, they've got a hundred things on sale and exactly two of them are 50% off. Most are 20%. #### off and don't spam me with that crap.

I look at things like boating, and not only are there fatal accidents, they also include kids drowning etc. Should we say a father is selfish because he wants a ski boat, then takes the kids along and one of them dies in a drowning? Is motorcycling or dirtbiking selfish if you also have your kids riding as well at a very young age? Is it selfish to push your kids into your same hobby so you can keep doing it, putting them at risk? Or is this called living life and having fun, which inherently has risks involved. Man I dislike the word selfish. Seems to be thrown around too easily.

Thank you, but it wasn't my wife and I. It was a friend in the hospital and a comment of, "I guess you didn't want to be a mom bad enough if you lost the baby." and then a heavy silence. That was a real trigger.
That brought me from quietly solemn to physically shaking to hold down murderous intent and a desire to get into a full on brawl. My wife and I went through miscarriage more than half a decade ago and it's still raw. Miscarriage isn't something a lot of people "resolve". They just get good at pushing it down. My wife and I aren't the types to celebrate that birthday or anything like that, but there is always a pause on the day before my birthday. TBH, and I've never said it openly to my wife, it was one of the reasons why I got snipped. I never wanted to go through that again. Fishing your child out of the toilet, putting it into a plastic bag and fridge then driving it to the lab to get tested the next morning is its own level of ####ed up.
The worst comments for my wife and I at that time was, "At least you're young, don't worry." I mean, awful words for the scenario, but obvious it came from the a place of good intentions. "I guess you didn't want to be a mom bad enough if you lost the baby." though... that's hundreds of times worse. There's no way it came from a place of good intentions.
Not trying to make it about me, but, "Oh DoubleF, you're not the one going through it directly, so it isn't as bad for you." I mean, I get it. But it still sucks. I get it sucked way worse for my wife from a physical and emotional level, which is why when I recall it was like the world imploding and exploding at the same time, I couldn't truly fathom how much worse it actually could be to go through that scenario when I was basically maxed out as the guy... And then there was yesterday where it was obvious it was worse. I was frothing mad hearing that comment on the way out and it's not even my wife or I. My friend must be in nothing short of a literal hell hole right now and it really upsets me.
#### those people.
I agree with your comments about selfishness. I might consider it selfish if there's constant unreasonable risk that many direct participants feel uncomfortable with. But I do believe that people are good at handling risk. It's just that so many people consider certain risk unnecessary and have to make comments when they shouldn't.
For instance, I want to take my family for a hot air balloon ride. Someone might say I'm selfish for putting my family at risk and there's better "safer" activities. I'd probably just roll my eyes.

My hearts here for you man, fwiw. When my wife had to deliver our stillborn child, knowing it wouldn’t survive, a significant part of me died and while it’s nearly a decade on I don’t think it’s reborn fully yet. People’s comments about having another chance or things happen for a reason made it exceptionally difficult to not turn violent.
As the man, your feelings are still valid and real. Never forget that.

Probably same kind of person who tells someone with a disability that they won the lottery when a rich kid broke their wheelchair.

Lol! My old apartment building was like this, I was on the 3rd floor and it was the slowest goddamn elevator ever invented by man.
Those antique elevators where there was an attendant and he to crank to move the thing would move faster than this POS.
Some of the tenants were looking at me like "why does he always take the stairs?!?"
Because I can be at my door before that POS elevator even starts moving from the main floor. Thats how slow it is.
I'd only consider it if I'm carrying or moving something incredibly heavy.

Guys who put useless qualifications by their name in an email to look smarter or important or something. Like yeah I get it when you're a doctor or engineer or some other real level of education, but when it's a certificate from like a two-day online course, maybe pump the brakes a little bit, lol.
