Anything you can get on Steam is available and you can actually get Epic Games store stuff on it too so availability isn't the issue. It is 100% a hardware thing. The Steam Deck hardware, IIRC, is roughly the equivalent of a PC with an AMD 3750x and a GTX 1050 - so perfectly competent hardware in its day, but the day has come and gone.

That said, because it's only driving an 800p screen (which honestly in OLED looks fantastic IMO), it doesn't need as much power, and there's some black magic going on that seems to make things perfectly playable that shouldn't be. Lots of people managing to get a stable 30FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 on their deck, for example, lots of people use it for stuff like Elden Ring. I just don't think it's the right tool for that job, and for the most part those aren't the types of games I play.

There are some games that simply don't work at all due to anti-cheat software blocking them, or the like because they assume everyone uses windows and SteamOS is linux based. You can't play Fortnite, for example, which I consider to be a feature.

You make it sound tempting. I don't need any more excuses to spend any money post-divorce ha ha ha.

I use it almost exclusively as my portable emulator. Every trip I just re-visit an old NES/SNES/Genesis/PSX game

If all you want is a good portable emulator, you could save a few bucks by going with the Retroid Pocket 5. About half the price of the base model Steam Deck in a much more portable form factor, and it will handle every system up to the Gamecube/PS2 era

I'm probably going to pick one of these up sometime next year, hopefully when it goes on sale

I’m thinking about getting one as well. I love the Steam Deck but it’s bulky and I like my little Anbernic but an OLED screen with better controls and performance would be a big step up for portable play.

I also play on my phone using a GameSir controller. The wider screen is great for 3DS. You can set up ES-DE if you want.

I use my LCD steamdeck all the time. When I play games directly on the deck, I usually get 3-5 hours of battery life depending on the power required (which I think is actually really great battery life. . . ). I tend to play lower demanding games (indies, pixel art games, metroidvanias etc.) which are generally fantastic on the deck. When I'm playing a graphically intensive AAA game, I tend to just stream to my deck from my PC or my PS5. When streaming, the battery life goes for many many hours as the heavy lifting is done by your PC/PS5. The only genre I don't much like playing on the deck is CRPGs but that's really just a preference for mouse and keyboard control.

I have a Steam Deck OLED and it's great. I just played through all 80 hours of Metaphor on it, I'd say it would get a good 3-4 hours of battery life and that's a AAA game (not exactly cutting edge graphics but still decent). The screen is huge and beautiful.

It's good but not great. It's an Ubisoft game so it has some of that classic Ubisoft game elements. If you are a Star Wars fan you should get enough enjoyment out of it.

Welp, unsurprisingly looks like the Flight Simulator 2024 launch was a ####show. Not shocked that a highly anticipated game where you stream most of the content rather than download it is having server problems and people couldn't even download it.

Although it seems like it's already getting better. Glad I decided to wait until the weekend

Interesting... I mean that's clearly not true of all SNES games generally, but if we're talking just JRPGs, I guess it's between Mana and Super Mario RPG probably.

I don't think SMRPG has aged as nicely. What SNES games would you say looked better than FFVI or Trials of Mana?

I think Tengai Makyo Zero, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean, Terranigma, and Illusion of Gaia looked a little better. Though it probably is splitting hairs as sprite based art has a lot of subjective preference attached

I didn't notice until just this week that Deep Silver released another Dead Island 2 DLC called "SoLA". Love the new apex zombies.
