All the best, Gary! Home gown and absolutely loved the club, and the best RB we had for a long time. Can't believe he's played in over 600 matches for the club (a massive 7 goals too haha). Probably the best English RB of his generation, too.
Love him or hate him, you had to admire how much the team meant to him and the work he put in.
Champions League, 8 titles, 3 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, Intercontinental Cup, Fifa World Club Cup

And things just got worse for Newcastle. Granted, not much worse as thats very difficult to accomplish at this point, but worse none the less.
Quote:
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is set to delve into the free-transfer market after it was confirmed that striker Shola Ameobi has broken his cheekbone.
We really needed to add someone before Ameobi got hurt - there is no way he can play well enough to carry the team. Best is garbage and Ranger isn't mature enough yet. That leaves Løvenkrands who is basically a decent Championship player and Phil Airey who is just a kid. Terrible.

Yeah, Pardew right now must be shaking his head and wondering why he took this job. Its like the whole time since he took over his neck has been in the noose and then on transfer deadline day Ashley and Llambias kicked the block out from under his feet.
Newcastle fans should be (and by most indications are) irate. They played well, they got promoted again, they were playing really well, then they fire the manager and sell their best player and make no moves to replace him.
And dont tell me kicking the tires on N'Zogbia was a legit attempt to replace Carroll. That was pure posturing, no one is paying £12M+ for insomnia.
And I can empathize, its total BS that that £35M transfer money remains available to Pardew, Ashley totally pocketed that just like the cancers Hicks and Gillette were doing with Liverpool.
I have nothing against Newcastle, they're a team I really respect and its upsetting to see them managed so poorly.
We talk about this in hockey about how its generally preferable to let the hockey operations people handle the hockey operations and for the owners to GTFO and leave them alone to do their jobs. The seperation is not quite so distinct in soccer, most owners meddle to a degree, but here it shows that its more beneficial for the owners to be invisible, Pardew must be pulling his hair out and you know damn well hes going to take the fall for a poor season even though there really is little he can do about it.
I liked the quote on transfer deadline day after the Carroll transaction had been made: 'Who is the clear winner here? Ashley's preferred Casino and Pub.'

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Yeah, all true. The team will never see any of that money. And what's an even bigger joke is that Ashley didn't trust Hughton with money...and then didn't give any to Pardew!
And, a funny fact from our Fulham game Wednesday, the last seven times we played Fulham we have had a different manager each time. Isn't that incredible?

Its unbelievable, its like Ashley honestly enjoyes just screwing with the fans. Right now I think the temperature of the fans is honest hostility, but if he keeps this up, or, even worse, should Newcastle get relegated (I dont think they will, but it could happen) that temperature is going to change to somewhere close to open revolt sooner rather than later.
I just dont get what he thinks hes doing. Pocketing the £35M from the Carroll sale is just going to enrage the fans and become a huge detriment to the team.
Not to mention the poor results because now they've got no one to put the ball in the net. Further, guys like Barton and Nolan are going to start looking to ply their trad elsewhere.
AND! AND! That whole rigmarole with the transfer request, what in the blue hell did he think he was doing there? I know they're Geordies, but they're not stone cold ######ed.

The whole insomnia thing was infuriating. I mean, if you are going to try and pull that crap over on the fans why would you try for a player who we already sold for less!?! He was happy to leave, he isn't that great a player. It make NO SENSE. If you're going to try something like that at least make an offer to someone we might actually get back. ESPECIALLY if it was for 10 mill +.
But, like I said earlier, if that fat prick does pocket the money then hopefully it moves him closer to GTFO.

I just dont know what he wants. I mean, a return on investment is to be expected unless hes just like Hicks and Gillette who couldnt for the life of them comprehend why they couldnt get a premium price for an asset that they drove into the ground.
It seems like his entire business plan is to keep Newcastle up as long as possible and just rape the club for whatever he can get out of it for as long as he can. But then what? Whatever you've taken out of the club you're not going to get back in a sale price. You cant do that, you cant have it both ways but thats what they seemingly want.
The N'Zogbia stunt reminded me of the Keane fiasco where Liverpool sold him back to Tottenham for like half what they initially paid for him. Good bit of business that.
Like I said, as a Liverpool fan who just endured the tyrannical reign of Hicks and Gillette I can empathise about the trials and tribulations of having a crap owner.
The EPL should really look at methods to limit ownership's access to transfer funds. I know that doesnt make any sense from a business perspective as they're the owners and its their money and they should be able to do what they want with it, but for some clubs its becoming ridiculous.
Watch what happens this summer, should we have a standing over/under or odds that whatever moves Newcastle make their net spend is going to be way, way under that £35M?

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
As fragile as the Arsenal back-line was/can be, today's defeat was a combination of ineptitude by Dowd, Diaby, and the defense.
I have no clue why Dowd can't see why Barton should be given his two cautions yet he can see two penalties from across the pitch. As Newcastle's second spot-kick shows, the man loves to give away penalties.
Diaby, flaming fool.
The defense, I'm not sure what to say. In the second half, that wasn't the pair of centrebacks we wanted or needed. The fact that Squillaci was able to be subbed in shows why Arsene was right not to dip into the market; would we have been able to afford anything better, at a reasonable price, that would fit into our long-term plans?
At the end of the day, which has been thoroughly ruined, the team needs to move on and forget about today.

It is somewhat bittersweet, nice that our crash and burn has gone unpunished but a bit frustrating that we could have gained more ground than we did. RVP was right though!

I think it completely opens the league back up, this pains me to say it but this United team couldn't hold a candle to the Arsenal one that did it
but Utd's next 4 games are City, @ Wigan, @ Chelsea, @ Liverpool
could see something like 4-5 pts out of that
and Arsenal and Spurs have an easy next month, Chelsea have Liverpool/Man U and then 2 easyish games, City have a cupcake schedule as well after the United game
Setanta is right. So glad our pub switched to Bell and consequently gets Setanta HD now. . I'm going to bed early tonight, I can not miss that game for any reason.
