I don't think anybody here knows the answer to that. All you can do at this point is call them and ask. It's not like they're going to flag your account as a troublemaker or something.

I cannot wait for this phone to come out. Looks like I will be going to Rogers July 30 to make sure I can get in on any short term data plan deals they might have.

I am in the same boat as you (different phone) and I am fully expecting Rogers to make me purchase another sim card (as the iPhone uses the new sim card type - micro sim I think).

Best case: 32GB iPhone 4 @ $299, keep my 6GB data plan but add on the $10 iPad tie-in.
Worst case: No early HUP, no iPad tie-in, and I keep using my 3GS. I then save my bucks for a 64GB WiFi-only iPad.

When hardware upgrades are available do they normally allow renegotiation of contracts? For example, I have some discounts that run out next year (end of my contract). I wouldn't mind signing another two or three year contract provided I get those discounts again (and maybe more).

Thank god you're getting an iPhone. No more OwnThisWorld at random wifi hotspots around the downtown core. I suppose it's about time an iPhone developer actually bought an iPhone hey?
|
Yeah being an iPhone developer without an iPhone tends to be awkward!
P.s. sorry about freaking you guys out, I just couldn't take another rendition of 'Wheels on the bus', not with those sweet lookin ladies on the corner.

Where can one pick up an iPhone on Friday? Best Buy I know for sure. Futureshop? What Rogers stores will have them?

That's the million dollar question isn't it? The suspense is frustrating!

What sort of Mickey Mouse operation doesn't know 4 days before launch what the distribution is going to be? If for no other reason than staffing needs, you'd think these stores would know roughly how many units they'll be receiving..

I'm really thinking this is the issue. Either that or none of the wireless giants in Canada have their act together.. which isn't altogether outside the realm of impossibility.

This isn't the first time that the Canadian Mobile Coalition (CMC™) has waited until the last minute to release details. It's just that the only time everyone pays attention is when the details are related to an Apple release.
I don't know why people are surprised about this.

Maybe some of us haven't followed every phone release with baited breath to have even known about this problem. I don't think I've ever heard about a CMC until your post.

Anybody with with a cell phone bill should know by now some of the games the Big Three play. This isn't exactly privileged information, nor is it proprietary to tinfoil-wearing basement dwellers with nothing to do all day but hit F5 on HowardForums. If you read newspapers with any kind of regularity, you must have come across a story or two over the years about Robbers and Bellus.
Edit: There's also a very good reason that you haven't heard about the CMC before. (Here's a hint, courtesy of lmgtfy: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22Canadian+Mobile+Coalition%22.)

The microSIM will be free if you buy the phone from Apple. Carriers will charge you ten bucks for it, I believe.
Also it sounds like the carrier stores will get anywhere between 5 and 30 units, depending. Future Shops, Best Buys etc. will have them too, but Apple Stores obviously get the most stock by far. Gonna try to get mine there.

The real trick is going to be finding a store that will do a HUP for you (zero commission) while new contracts are standing in line. More than one scumbag at a mobility store has lied to my face about being out of stock on a phone, just to avoid wasting inventory on a no-pay HUP.

Yeah, carrier stores are pretty picky about what they sell you. Apparently, they don't like selling you full-priced phones either because they don't get commission on those either.
With the Apple Store, it doesn't seem to matter. Sounds like they'll do new contracts, full-priced phones, upgrades, whatever.
EDIT: Although, since I'd have to change my plan and renew my contract anyway to get a data plan, I wonder if a Rogers store might be more accommodating in that case.

Well... I phoned into Rogers last night and asked about HUP and availability, etc. As expected, they acted like they didn't even know who Apple was. Putting that aside, though, I did ask them about the rumour floating around that they wouldn't be taking orders over the phone... and he was quite clear about existing customers doing HUPs were able to phone in and get the phone delivered to them still.
That was a relief for me. I've never stood in line for any phone. I just phone Rogers on the day of release and get the thing dropped off to me 2-3 days later. The last two phones were iPhones (3G and 3GS), I called on Friday and got it on Monday.
The trick is to call early!

Yeah, I really don't want to stand in line. I had heard you wouldn't be able to get a phone over the phone anymore, but didn't realize it didn't apply to HUPs. May try really early on Friday. If not, I wonder if the line will disappear at Apple after work on Friday...
