My preferred trade targets are Kyrou from STL, and Mercer+Holtz from NJ.
Kyrou is already a star, right shot, fast as the wind, 24 years old, and Canadian.
Mercer looked great as a rookie, right shot C, and was one of the Canadian kids I had my eye on his draft. Holtz is a 20 year old, right shot RW Swede.
Of course if NYR are in the mix then Lafreniere or Kakko are both very attractive targets too.

He's 33, getting worse, and makes 9.5 until the 25-26 season.
There better be a boatload of 1sts and 2nds to take that on.

Benn is even slower than Tkachuk, and getting slower....

Benn has only 14M in actual salary to be paid out in the next three years. That is actually a lot closer to his actual cap value to a team. So, on a team that is looking to get to the floor, acquiring Benn would probably only cost about a first from Dallas.
To add onto this, Dallas can send a 1st and Benn to Arizona.
Calgary sends Tkachuk to Dallas.
Dallas sends Wyatt Johnson, Logan Stankoven and Denis Gurianov to Calgary.
The caps all work out, and Calgary actually ends up with extra.

Mercer or Kyrou and a 1st in 2023 would make me happy (ok not happy, but satisfied).
Anything else tacked on is just icing.

Lets go retro and get both Seguin and Hall. Tyler or Taylor?

The more I look at the rumoured trade partners, the more something around Mercer + Holtz looks promising. NJD are about the only partner that wouldn’t have major cap headaches. Even there, though, since they signed Palat they’d have to move a sizeable contract out in a deal. Severson?

This is one of the things that was changed in the 2020 CBA extension.
From the MOU:
Quote:
66. Traded Player Ability to Sign an 8-Year SPC
CBA §50.8(b)(iv) shall be amended to provide that when a Club acquires a Player who is signed through the subsequent Trade Deadline, it can immediately sign him to an 8-year SPC without waiting until the subsequent Trade Deadline if otherwise permitted to do so under Section 50.5(f).
|
So, the Flames don't have to do a sign-and-trade for him to sign an 8-year deal. Although, I doubt any team would make the trade on just the promise that he'd consider signing there long-term.

Benn I'm sure would sooner retire than play for CGY. As much as we hate him, he hates the Flames.

Sure, but they couldn't sign the extension until after January 1 and would risk him changing his mind before then.
It would also be a risk for him since his points total is most-likely going to drop without the same linemates as he had this year.

Lol, I’m hindsight didn’t Johnny cause us to lose out in the McDavid sweepstakes? We made it to the second round of playoffs the year we were predicted to be front runners for first overall.

He isn’t signed through the next trade deadline though. That doesn’t apply.

If Flames are being offered Kyrou + first rounder, imo you run with it.

He can only sign a 7 year contract with his traded team. The new rule, the Karlsson rule pretty much, allowed for Stone to be signed because of MoU change 66.
Previously the Sharks obtained Karlsson in October who had one year left on his deal. He could not be signed to an 8 year contract until after the deadline by the Sharks. The new rule allows for traded players with expiring contracts after the season to be signed to 8 year contracts (if acquired before deadline). So Stone, or had Gaudreau been traded last off-season the acquiring team could have immediately signed him to an 8 year deal.
Tkachuk is not signed, so the only team who can offer him an 8 year old deal is the Flames, at least until January 1st if he signs a 1 year contract.

Blues have Kyrou, Perunovich, Neighbours
Devils have Mercer, Bratt, Holtz
Stars have Harley, Bourque, Johnston, Stankoven
Predators have Tomasino, Askarov, L'Heureux, Evangelista
those are the teams with the main pieces I'd be interested in, in addition to picks obviously. If there's an option to maximize the return if you have to take on a bad contract, you do it. Flames need to get as much value here as possible.

Speaking from experience, it usually follows an emotional meltdown and mod being in a snarky mood.
I own one jersey for current players on the team: Sean Monahan. I was seriously considering getting a new jersey since it seems like this may be his last year in Calgary. But after the last couple weeks I don't think I'll be rushing to do that. Watch him come back from his surgery and pot 25 goals again. Sean Monahan is looking a lot better all of a sudden.

Mercer, Holtz and a high pick and you take it. Holtz has star potential.
