Take this as a rumor for now but The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Matt Reeves Batman film will be filming in November. No word of who will be Batman but my fingers are crossed that Affleck will be back
My 11 year old and I were talking this morning about what other animated movies could challenge Spiderverse for Best Animated Feature this year. It should easily outdo Smallfoot and Ralph this year.
Incredibles 2 and Isle of Dogs are the two other legit nominees. Ralph will probably get a nom but isn’t really in it.
I do agree, but the 'Best Animated Feature' award is more of a popularity contest than any of the other categories. It's very often congruent with the highest grossing animated feature, and rarely moves away from Disney/Pixar -- the last time a non-Disney film won was 2011 when Rango won, the year Pixar released their only 'miss' in Cars 2. Before that is was Happy Feet in 2006 (another Cars year for Pixar).
With Pixar releasing their biggest commercial success ever this year, plus it being pretty well received, I'd say they are about 90% guaranteed another win. Even if Spiderverse is a better movie.
Isle of Dogs is really cool and has some amazing artistry behind it, and the Academy likes Wes Anderson, but it's still a bit too weird/niche to be a real contender.
Yeah while it actually appears to be an okay movie I think Aquaman benefited from a couple of things at the box office.
1) Only noteworthy blockbuster at Christmas Time: Disney had family friendly Mary Poppins but IMO made a mistake by not moving Solo/Ant-Man/Captain Marvel into this release window. Aquaman and Bumblebee were really the only "blockbuster" type movies that came out recently and personally didn't see a lot of marketing push behind Bumblebee.
2) Jason Mamoa: They had a strong lead face to put out there in the marketing material and think that he's been able to attract more casual fans to go out and see this movie.
3) It wasn't a complete tire fire: People want to like DC movies and if the movie isn't a complete piece of trash people will support it. We saw the same thing with Wonder Woman getting decent reviews and then taking off at the box office through word of mouth.
I would add that there was some sizeable competition. Mary Poppins, Spiderverse, and Bumblebee were all big budget films specifically aimed at Christmas audiences.
If we'd had this same discussion just post-JL a lot of people would be shocked that Aquaman managed to blow those movies away. r
Once again, people don't want to like DC movies. If anything it's the opposite and being associated with the DCEU is a negative. WW did so well due to it's political message.
Pixar is awesome, no arguments there, but I think they've won a couple awards on reputation and not necessarily the quality of the movie (Brave, Up). Up has a lot of people in love with it for the amazing first 8 minutes but I think it slogs into fairly typical animated fare from there.
We'll see. I'd love to see another company get rewarded, especially for such a unique, confident, excellent movie that surprised everyone with how good it is (Spiderverse).
I don't get to invested the awards, their opinions hold less sway for me that some random guy coming out of the theater.
But I will say this princess scene in Ralph was probably the best scene in an animated movie this year. Totally stole the show for me, Disney taking cheap shelf deprecating was just allot more fun that it should have been.
I also really liked world building are around the internet.

Weekly Aquaman box office report, it is now up to $940 million world wide, $1 billion is guaranteed . Should pass Civil War by the end of it's run.
How is this possible? I just don't get it. It's DC, shouldn't everyone be crapping all over it by now? That's the cool thing to do these days.

Needs about $210 million more to beat civil war? It still hasn't opened in Japan though. Should be guaranteed about $25 million there. It pulled in $30 million this weekend, which was over there estimates.
Civil War is more of an Avengers 2.5 than a solo movie, so this would be a huge accomplishment. The next step is Iron Man 3, which is the second biggest solo superhero movie of all time.
It should reach a billion by next week end so it's totally possible. We are living in a world where Black Panther and Aquaman made a combined $2.5 billion at the box office.
Hopefully they can build on this momentum and Shazam turns out to be good and a hit with audiences. 3 months to go until it comes out
Shazam looks good but has brutal release timing. Captain Marvel will be winding down and hype will be a fever pitch for Avengers. It realistically has three weeks to make money before it disappears, and that includes direct competition from Hellboy in week 2 and people catching Captain Marvel before Avengers. They needed to get that thing out early in February.
A huge part of Aquaman's success was nailing a good release date.

I'd agree. That is one packed superhero schedule.
The only saving grace is that Shazam will likely appeal to a slightly different audience then Hellbiy and Captain Marvel. It's much more kid friendly. The tone of Captain Marvel and Hellboy both look on the heavier side. In fact, I'd say Hellboy is likely to have little impact. Captain Marvel is also out 4 weeks before Shazam.
Another thing to take into account is spillover from the Avengers. People who go to the movies to see the Avengers sold out may go to Shazam as a backup.
Overall I think WB is probably aiming for more Ant-Man type figures with Shazam.
There's actually 10 superhero films coming out in 2019. So the issue is there really is no open space here. You've also got Spiderman, Joker, Glass, The Dark Phoenix, The New Mutants, and Alita.
Grats to Into the Spider-verse for best animated at the globes, now please make more movies of this sort.
