Easy. Corporate support which the NHL would have had 100% access to as the only professional league in town, plus Las Vegas residents choosing one sport to support with season tickets.
You simplify it into 'If 8 games makes the NHL's 41 unfeasible than it was doomed anyways', but the reality is it's more like "I can afford season tickets to one pro sport and the NFL is as big as it gets for myself as an American so I'm choosing that".

How does the NHL survive as the 2nd,3rd or even 4th option in other cites that are of a similar size to LV?
I don't see any NFL deal hindering the NHL much at all.

Does the NHL actually survive as those options in cities as small as LV though? Perminent resident population of LV is below 600K I think?

It'll hinder it for sure, as Las Vegas isn't a normal market. It's a market that every major American sport has been scared to go into, so this isn't some made up worry that NHL fans have dreamed up.
A big part of the NHL's decision to finally entertain the idea was, along with owners willing to go there, the advantage of getting their foot in the door before everyone else. That's huge, having access to every sports hungry local and corporation long before another league comes in would have given them a huge leg up on building support and a season ticket base that would hopefully stay once other leagues arrive.

If you guys are right, than the NHL should just stay away all together. If the NHL is a success in LV, it will surely encourage the NBA/NFL to set up shop there at some point in the future anyway. Doomed to fail, I suppose. I shouldn't be surprised, this was always a blatant money grab more than it was anything else. If it fails, each owner still gets a cool $15m payout plus part of the relocation fee when the team is inevitably pushed out of the market.

LV may be slightly smaller in population than some other NHL cities, but it has much more corporate dollars available than most NHL cities.
I don't really think the NHL should be expanding to LV....but the idea that the NFL or NBA moving there will discourage the NHL is highly doubtful in my opinion.

The Las Vegas Metro area is 30th largest in the US, with an estimated population of about 2.25 million in 2012: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._United_States
Raleigh-Durham, Nashville, and Buffalo are all smaller and have NHL teams (Nashville and Buffalo both have NFL teams too). Raleigh-Durham, Columbus, and St Louis are the only US NHL cities without a NFL franchise in its metro area next season.
Also, remember that it took 20 years for the NFL to return to Los Angeles, and that was with a lot of people trying to get it done, and none of the stigmas that Vegas has. It's a long way from a sure thing that the NFL will go to Vegas.

Chances of the NFL going to Vegas are still extremely slim as they don't even have financing for this facility nailed down and it's no slam dunk Davis would get the necessary votes from other owners.

It's crazy how Raiders still have fans when the owners have been actively trying to leave Oakland since the day they arrived.
