For that price I think I'll be getting a Nexus for my wife. What a steal!

So here's something I'm curious about....
My father has had an old flip phone since he retired 6 years ago, it's the one work gave him and he refused to even have a Blackberry prior to retirement and told them to keep it. He bought another "feature phone" sometime last year but hates it because the physical buttons are too small so with this price drop I'm thinking about just getting him a Nexus 4.
My mom got an iPhone two years ago now and loves it, 2 years is a good gestation time for my dad and I think the leap to a smart phone might be a good idea. The problem is I don't know if he wants to go with a plan. I know my moms is about 90+ a month and into retirement they don't want to be carrying two plans like that.
Could he keep his pay-as-you-go thing going, and just use the Nexus 4 main features on Wifi?
If he hates it and just loves his flip phones, no biggie, at 199 I'll just take it back and use it because by then I'm sure I'll have smashed my glass back but, curious to see.

Great deal - been going to pick this one up anyhow. I wonder if Koodo store will drop price as well?
I also wonder if I need to get 16 GB or would be fine with 8GB? Thoughts appreciated. I keep some music on phone along with some files and pics temporarily.

I would spend the extra money and get the 16 gb phone. 8gb gets filled up really quick, especially since there is space dedicated to the operating system and applications. If you run everything off of a cloud it may not be completely necessary however.

Yeah, if you're at all worried about it, go for the 16GB. I've been totally fine with 8GB with room to spare but I am running most things off the cloud. Google Play music is (officially) rumored to be coming to Canada shortly but if you're on a limited data plan that won't be a solution anyways.

Yup. The Nexus 4 is unlocked, so he can use a prepaid sim on any Canadian network (and many worldwide if he travels). Disable mobile data, and he will still be able to use wifi.

To add, this is what my wife does. She has a $100 virgin mobile card that charges 25c on. She has an unlocked iPhone 4.
You can even hook up 100Mb of data for $10 a month. You just have to call in to activate that, and they deduct the money from the balance.
It lasts her about 7 months doing this because she vary rarely calls. Text is her big thing.

Figured as much, just wanted to make sure. Didn't know how the mobile data would work as I'd hate to get him something like this then totally screw him over on a bill. Forgot that you can just disable mobile data.

This price drop really has me thinking about moving to a Nexus 4 from my S3.
I would love to have a a phone where I could get stock android (or even just non-touchwiz) without messing with ROMS every couple months.

Actually I'm going to suggest the other way MMF. If you want your father to embrace the technology, it should just "simply work." Meaning when he goes across the street or to another person's house, make the phone work. I know I have seen a few pre-paid plans that include progressive data; I'm thinking somebody like Fido or Koodo.
With my parents that is what I found; if I make it just work then they will embrace it. For my son's iPhone I did simply disable cellular data use. But he's a kid and if something doesn't work, he just figures out another way to make it work.

You can get stock Android (ASOP) on the S3. You have to unlock the bootloader but that is no big deal. I haven't noticed a huge difference between my S3 and my kids nexus4. I much prefer Slim or CM to stock anyways. Waiting on the N or S 5's to arrive.

I am rooted and on CM. The thing is in order for me to update to whatever new version of Android, I need to mess with ROM and nightlies until I find one that is stable enough for me.
Right now, I can't get my wireless AP to work, and I will be dammed if if the solution is running a script when the phone boots.
I would love to just do the update and not be worried that this or that might be broken.

To be fair, there have things here and there that are broken or buggy with the updates from Google, not that I've had to deal with it personally but I can understand the frustration of needing to constantly tweak something until it's where you want it.

The one we ordered from Koodo on Monday night arrived today. We bought it as a gift for my brother in law overseas, so we have been getting it setup.
I have to say I am quite impressed with it. Android 4.3 is really nice to use, and the phone responds well and has a good feel. The funny thing is my hunt for a good unlocked phone to use in the States ended last week when I got an unlocked iPhone 4, but now I'm debating putting that one up for sale and buying another one of these.
And yes, this all coming from a person who's last two phones have been iPhones. We use Android phones at work so I do use them to get them setup, but this seems so much better than the Galaxy S2s we have running 4.0

I was contemplating this deal today...
I have an unused, freshly rooted/unlocked/modded GS2 that I just finished turning into a media machine... Then a Galaxy Nexus running custom roms as my phone that is getting a bit sluggish.

Yeah, I'm with you Ken but they're both retired so I'm taking baby steps with the thing. They're in Newfoundland so it really seems to be the big three or bust out there, don't know if they have the sub brands. We'll start with this and see how it goes, see if he wants to add data or a small month-to-month plan.
