There’s a better chance that Backlund puts up 40 pts this season than 50 pts (IMO). If that’s the case, is he a 4.5MM player 1 year older? 2 years older?

I’m ok with the deal because we’ve done much worse and I like Backlund, but I certainly don’t view it as a “steal” or “very team friendly”. The cap going up several million only allows current teams to resign their own guys to raises and maybe go for a mid size fish….not 35 yr olds to multi year deals.

Backlund is putting up those 40 points while playing against the Hintz, Eichel, MacKinnons of the world. He plays PK1 and is the forward for 3v5. That is worth a ton to me.

That is a solid deal done by Conroy, getting the term and the dollars he did.

This must get him high up on the games played for the Flames list.

Backlund was our most consistent forward last year.

He’s already 3rd and will past Gio
Probably won’t reach Iggy

He just needs to play 4 more seasons and only miss a total of 17 games over those 4 seasons to get to Iggy.

38 year old Mikael Backlund popping the franchise record? Could happen. Would likely need a 5th season. Does Backs play 5 more seasons? He would turn 39 in March of that 5th season.

Gio turns 40 in a couple of weeks and is saddling up for another season.

My prediction on Mikael Backlund: he signs in the neighbourhood of three years at a $5.5M AAV. We will see how accurate I am. It’s always a grind to get there, but there is a will on both sides.

4.5x2 is way too little for a player of Backlund’s caliber.

Goal differential is the only thing that matters but people only pay for pointz.

$4.5M is a hometown discount (especially on a 2-year term). $5.5M and 3 years seems closer to market.

I hope it's 4.5 x 2. If so, that's a crazy good deal. But Friedman doesn't throw out predictions lightly. 5.5 x 3 sounds more realistic.

Obviously the 4.5 x 2 years is ideal, but 5.5 x 3 years isn't horrible for what Backlund brings. Still going to be a pretty valuable guy for 3 more years. I'm fine with anything close to those two rumors tbh.

Backlund stays with the Flames for another 2 seasons. All is right with the world again.

16.5m over 3 years starting next year is too much. I’d be against that deal.
If it’s 3 years it shouldn’t be over 12m.

5.5 x 3 is a much harder contract to move. He’d be a lifer on the Flames for sure
