Presumably straight white people wanted to make themselves feel superior over other white people since picking on visible minorities wasn’t cutting it anymore.

^Ugh, she's just the absolute worst. No loyalty whatsoever, changing her positions based on whichever way the wind blows or what could be politically advantageous to her.
Despicable.

she's always been opportunistic, but this just feels like a desperate hail mary. There was no way she could overcome a Democratic primary, but I don't see how this will help her cling on to the seat either.
thank god Warnock won.

It probably doesn't change much if she caucuses with the Democrats. Probably better to just ignore her attention seeking moves.
It does make for a complicated election though. Does anyone, anywhere on the political spectrum like her? Do Democrats run someone or does that just give an easy win to the Republican? I don't see her really having a chance as an independent vs a halfway decent republican, or having any chance against candidates from both parties. It doesn't change much for now, but sure screws the Democrats out of that seat in 2024.
I could get behind a good independent centrist who was sincerely standing up for what's best for her state, but she's not even really that. She just seems all about herself and leveraging a tight senate for her own good.

I mentioned this months ago, Sinema was not long for politics in Arizona. She was going to be primaried and run out of the Democratic party. She's made some enemies in the party and she was not going to get any support. Since she went to Washington she has aligned herself with corporate lobby groups and lined her pockets with as much money as she can find. She has turned her back on her constituents, especially her LGBTQ+ community, and has shown zero integrity or character as a person. If her hair was on fire she would be hard pressed to find a single Arizonan who would manage to work up a single squeeze of piss to put it out. She's over in Arizona politics and will be a lobbyist come 2025.

A man wiser than me already perfectly summed up Ms. Sinema.
Mod edit: over the line.

Sinema sent a really strong message to her constituents after they railed against her for her vote against raising the minimum wage to $15. This was her response.

Notice the ring prominently displayed. If you can't read it, it says "#### Off." She's so done in Arizona. No one likes her except for some of the Republicans, because she's "ownin' the libs." But they also know they can't trust her and would never for FOR her.

TBF to her - there are two independents senators before her who are basically Democrats in all but name only - Bernie Sanders and some guy in Maine.
She'll lose all power if he stops governing as a Democrat because they will just strip her of all committee assignments, etc and Democrats will stay win votes 50-50 with the tiebreaker of the VP. Basically would just hand all the control back to Manchin - not that they will pass much anyways now with the split houses.

Sinema is playing a game. If she runs as an independent in the next election she will pull votes from the Dems allowing the Repubs to take that seat. She knows she will lose the election, every demographic hates her, so this is a power play so to speak to hold onto her seat.

There isn’t a Dem in Arizona supporting Sinema . They would dump her now if they could.

Do the Dems run against her if she does run as an independent in 24? That would seem to very likely give the seat to the Republicans, even a whacky far righter. I don't know who wins a 1v1 between an independent Sinema and a nutbar right winger, but I guess she'd have a chance?

If the Republicans nominate a nutbar, Sinema will take as many seats from them as she does from the Democrats.
Angus King in Maine gets barely over 50% of the vote in Maine and he wins by like 20 points each election because the Republicans and Democrat candidates end up with tiny numbers.

I get the concerns/complaints about sending Bout back, but the Whelan stuff is just silly GOP talking points. Has it been confirmed that the Russians were even willing to trade Whelan?

I don't think it's that much of an issue. Who would even vote for Sinema at this point, regardless of her party affiliation? Arizona Democrats are clearly done with her, she hasn't served that state well at all. I think at this point, she's just universally hated in Arizona, so could she pull in enough votes to make this an issue for Democrats? I think they'll be fine if the throw a good candidate in the mix. Ruben Gallego has already teased running after Sinema's announcement.

to add to this, Trump was in office for two more years when Whelan got detained. He and his cultists didn't give a #### about him for years.
