Is there any fit better than the Calgary Flames and Patrik Laine? He checks so many boxes for the Flames. Sniping RW with size. yeah.
Matthews or Laine please. please.
Puljujarvi might be an even better fit. Also has a great shot, but drives play with insane speed through the wing and Hartley could mold him into Marian Hossa 2.0
I really think we need a solid triggerman. Monahan kind of likes to scoop in and finish up close and Gaudreau dangles but we need a true trigger man like Laine to compliment them. Sometimes I wish we still had Cammy.
You are the flames and you win the lottery, you would be just as happy with one of the Finns as they fit a positional need and you already have a top tier 1/2 down the middle for the future. Do you entertain trading/shopping the 1st overall to one of the other two lottery winners to see if they want Matthews bad enough to put a big package together that would obviously include there lottery pick. Even if you know which Finn you want, you try shopping to the 2nd lottery winner.
Teams I could see that would be all over this:
Toronto
Columbus
Arizona
Vancouver
Would that be in the realm of possibility and what else could you get in that package.
I don't think so. I think you take the best player available, every time, if you're picking first.

I think you definitely have to explore moving down and see if the teams are offering enough to tempt us to move down. I'm not sure I'd move down to #3 if I had the #1 pick but I'd certainly be willing to move down to #2.

The only way that would happen IMO is if the coyotes drafted 2nd or 3rd and the Flames got first. I could see the coyotes doing anything to get their hometown kid, I think the other teams would just keep their assets and take one of the top 3 because it's so close.

I'd explore moving down. Say Arizona was in the #3 slot and really wanted Matthews. If they were willing to kick in a prospect or two (MacInnis and/or Christian) I would make the move. Take the best Finn available and come away with multiple good assets. I also wouldn't be disappointed if we ended up with Gauthier, which might allow us to move down further and accrue even better assets. It all depends on the Flames rankings and who they see as the BPA. I think this is all for naught. I think we draft at best at the #4 slot, likely lower.
Unless Edmonton is picking top 3, you pick your guy, let the rest fall to the other two. How often does a team spend to move up one spot.
Besides, I kind of want CGY to pick #3 and get Puljujarvi now just to spite some of the people who look past the guy like he's some chump compared to the other two.

That's not the question to ask, you should be asking how often does a team try to trade up 1 spot, I'd guess fairly often. Yearly we hear of teams trying to trade up.
If the team picking #2 or #3 is in dire need of a franchise centre you can be damn sure they'll make an enticing offer to move up.
Given that the top few in this draft are close, it does make sense that the top few teams may move around to end up drafting positionally.

I definitely would consider trading down. Or (and I know I'll get flamed for this), taking Matthews and trading Monahan.
Having three elite centres sounds good, but I think it would cause some serious problems. You would be telling one of Monahan or Bennet that they have no future as a centre with the Flames. And these guys know what beings shunted to the wing will likely hurt their career and their career earnings. Just like the writing was on the wall for RNH the moment McDavid was drafted, the writing would be on the wall for Monahan or Bennet the moment Matthews was drafted. I'd just as soon deal one of those three assets right at the outset before things went sour.
If you traded down with Columbus, you could get a Rychel. Maybe Bjorkstrand. You might even be able to pry a Jenner (if Calgary added) from them. That's how desperate they are for a franchise centre like Matthews. I imagine Arizona would also offer a lot to snag Matthews. These franchises need an American superstar centre in the worst way.
I might even make a deal with a team picking 4th or 5th.

Silly statement to make when there's a triple lottery involved. We may end up with a 1/4 to 1/3 chance of drafting top 3 due to lottery.
Is it? Is it silly to suggest that we likely won't gain benefit from the draft lottery? I mean, we have a 66-75% chance of not drafting in the top three, with the lottery. We currently sit 5th and could easily drop to 6th or 7th as the season plays out. I would love to draft earlier, but the odds are not in our favor.
