Thought I would update, since I am here in Kurdistan again.
My update is this:
I have nothing to update. Haha. It is extremely quiet within the borders of Kurdistan. My worksite is about 25 kms from the River that serves as the border between the Pesh Merga and ISIS in this area.
If I hadn't stumbled across this thread again, I would have totally forgotten anything was going on (I am a bit detached from the news, as I dont have a TV in my room).
But talking to the Security guys, they couldn't be more relaxed at the moment. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing.
Edit: I should note that there WAS a car bombing in Erbil about 2 weeks ago that spooked the Militia, but since then they have really cracked down on letting ANY Arabs into their borders. Since then there has been no action within the borders.
All this info is great and all ... but I think what we all really want to know is what your raise due to increased danger was as a percentage.
It's a combo of things. Money, adventure, the work itself, career advancement, the group of people I work with. For now those things are outweighing the bad stuff. Danger. Travel. Camp. The project.
I'm constantly reevaluating my outlook on my future here. I'm leaning towards coming back to Canada permanently in the spring. But if something comes up I am expecting an answer on, I may move to Dubai for a few years and continue on.
And for Q2: I saw my uplift increase 2 fold since the ####storm hit.

I think it's crazy that they haven't built a new A10 in 30 years.
B-52's haven't been built in over 50, but those are bombers, not low altitude support fighters.
The day and age of the specialized war plane is pretty much over.
also conventional theory is that the A-10 which was designed as a tank buster had to get too close to the battlefield to be effective, the idea being that its better to stand off and hit a enemy formation from the edge of a combat area.
Also while the A-10 is heavily armored and armed, the 30 mm rotary cannon alone is like the death star of the battle field, it wouldn't survive very well against the next generation of fighters and SAMS.
Personally I love the A-10. It was designed to fly between rocks, light up a enemy tank formation with its 30mm gun and be able to take massive amounts of damage.
But in the modern battlefield its day is coming to an end. But against a group like ISIS its a very effective weapon.

Like most things in the military, another use will be found for it.
I am actually surprised it wasn'ts used more in the sandbox to tear up some of the "fortifications" used by the enemy, but as I type that I realize the collatoral damage would be too great.
Still the A-10 is a near perfect piece of kit. Perfectly designed for it's intended purpose, this rarely happens in the military.

It sounds perverse, but what a thing of beauty, I totally forgot about flying artillery.
I honesty wonder how pissed the engineers were that first thought about putting an artillary piece in a plane.
they've recently gone through an upgrade, some of the existing AC-130H and U have been converted to what's called a Dragon Spear where they have the 30mm chain gun, but instead of artillery they've added precision guided bombs to the wings.

Canadians that leave the country to join ISIS are damaged people who want to rape and murder. That is their motivation. Better that they are on the ground in Syria and Iraq where they can be disposed of in a number of creative ways using military technology without cumbersome legal proceedings. Every time one of these scums dies over there it is one less future murderer and rapist to contend with in Canada. Ahhhh...that felt good.
