Didn't eat there, but the Wynn makes the Bellagio look like a dump.

I ate at the Bellagio yesterday for the night buffet and it was pretty solid. Our waiter was funny and was always around to refill our drinks.

Wynn Buffett is by far the best. Bellagio is still great.

I went to the Wicked Spoon and it was amazing (but expensive).
I think that's at Cosmopolitan.

Had the Bellagio one in June and it was great, I loved the mini Reuben Sandwiches. Can't speak for the Wynn but I'm very sure it'd be great to.

agreed, the new sky scrapers are taking away that vegas charm...they are all you see looking down the strip. Wow a high rise just like any other city on earth

Spend a week at Treasure Island or Excalibur and get back to me. Not to say the quirkiness and even the feel of these hotels when built weren't unique. I really enjoyed being in Vegas when it was super cheap and gambling centric. It was a lot more fun. Now they are worn out, mostly dirty, smell of smoke and just as pricey for drinks and food.
The new hotels are restaurant focused, high end brand shopping focused, with expensive gambling. Clean modern interiors with rooms and resort like pools. All high buck and not $79 a night. I imagine they will wear down over time.
The City Centre project is designed to cut a massive amount of properties out of the action by keeping you trapped in their ecosphere of $.
In my opinion the Wynn hotel makes and captures the feeling of old Vegas with it's opulence and getting "it" that you want the best and a break from life. When they call you by your last name you can pretend for a week.

The Bellagio buffet is epic. I highly recommend it. I haven't tried the Wynn buffet

Hate to be a downer but the reality is nobody can make any money selling 'old vegas charm' on the strip. Virtually nobody with deep pockets is looking for a theme park. If they were, MGM would actually care about Excalibur and Luxor and put some money into those properties. They get better customers by building city center, critical mass with its own shopping, nightclubs, cabanas and condos.
If that's important then obviously downtown is the place to go which seems to be doing ok. But what downtown is selling would never work in a high rent district like the strip.

I really hope the NHL rumours are true and Vegas gets a team. Not sure if it would be sustainable in the long run but it would be awesome to fly down there for a weekend to catch a couple games and do some gambling

My wife and I are debating where to go this winter. We're thinking possibly Las Vegas if the price is right. She's a teacher so we have to plan our vacation around her March break.
Where we're flying from Nova Scotia down, the airfare is more expensive than from Alberta, so we're not looking at a five star hotel.
What are people's thoughts on Luxor?
I've also signed up for the Mlife and the Harrah's reward programs. I'm not sure if they'll end up sending anything given that I haven't used them.
I'm interested in the best, but cost-effective place to stay.

I stayed at the Luxor a few years ago. Its actually quite nice and the reason I think its lower priced than other comparable hotels is the location; its pretty far south on the strip so if you're looking for a central location I'd stay elsewhere (ie. Aria). Id stay there again for sure. The view of the rest of the strip was nice and the elevators go up at an angle, which was weird but cool

Personally I wouldn't stay south of MGM, and even that's pushing it.

First time in Vegas with the wife? Spring for something nicer than the Luxor. Guy's trip and you've been before? Sure, any bed will do.
We ate at the Luxor buffet one night... the property is kind of a dump. And not in a campy "I've been drinking for days who cares" kinda way.

Luxor is too far from the middle of strip imo.
Flamingo might be the best bang for your buck, not the nicest place but in a great location.
Monte Carlo is a step above the Flamingo and not much more expensive. It is sort of bland though.
If you want to impress you GF without spending too much money I would probably go to the MGM Grand.

So he should book Flamingo with the wife, and MGM Grand with the GF?
"Well, honey, I know you're tired and ready for bed, but I think I have some more gambling left in me. I'm gonna head down to MGM Grand and see what kind of action is going on down there. Have a nice sleep"
Luxor is pretty far south. When I first went to Vegas it wasn't bad, but now I'm older and want to walk less steps and a more centralized location is my preference.

I have some friends who stayed at Luxor in January 2013. They said they were impressed with the place. I've been tempted to stay at Luxor myself, but having stayed at Mandalay Bay before I'm not too keen on the location of those two properties.
I prefer no farther south than NYNY or MGM. I got spoiled by staying at Bellagio. It was an awesome location, and the room wasn't too shabby either.
If you don't mind a lot of walking then Luxor would probably be a decent choice.
If you're looking for inexpensive then maybe Monte Carlo may not be a bad idea. I haven't stayed there myself, but my best friend and his wife stay there most of the time. It doesn't cost much and the rooms are nice and you don't spend much time in your room anyway. Monte Carlo is a bit more centralized than Luxor.
Somebody else mentioned MGM Grand. I would also recommend it. It is nicer rooms on a more affordable budget. It isn't quite Bellagio in quality but it is cheaper and it is a step above places like NYNY, Luxor and Monte Carlo for only a little more money.
