I always felt that Holloway was drafted way too high and hyped way to much. He just doesn't seem to be all that special.

He is a buddy of 97, he will not get waived. Look at what being a buddy did for Nurse and his contract.

I wonder if stealing a Calgary kid away (well, Bragg Creek) motivated the Oilers. Calgary might have taken him at 24.

I could see Brown having a big game on Sunday thereby forcing the Oilers to keep him on the roster for a 10th game. A situation very similar to the Oilers motivation for re-signing Kassian after he "enforced the code" against the Flames.

I don't think there is much danger of Brown not making his 10 games.
They only have 18 healthy skaters and are up against the cap.

They could waive him, but who would take him knowing there is $3.25 MM hand grenade attached to his contract next year.

Could they send him down? I guess, but I'd be interested to know if his bonus has some protection against that. I certainly wouldn't trust the oilers not to do that, and I'd make sure my bonus was for any pro games, not just NHL ones. Here's hoping his agent was on the ball on that one.

Dreger on the barn burner today gave a big no to that. He said Brown is too respected to do that to, not to mention McD would throw a hissy fit if his best friend gets sent down.

They will be using all their new cap on Brown next year.

Wait. Darren Dreger was on with Boomer? How does that work?

If they do it, players around the league will take note and this option will be closed from now on.

It would completely screw over Connor Brown as he likely wanted more salary

Brown hasn't put up a point in the league since 21-22.

Was pointless in his brief stop in Washington and now pointless and -5 in 7 games to start in Edmonton.

I can't wait for them to owe this guy another 3.25 in a few more games.

He has gone 25 games without a goal now.... only 2 assists in those 25 games. 11 consecutive games without a point.

Don't forget they'll also still be paying James Neal $1.9 MM

Next year they are going to be paying >$5MM for guys not to play for them.

They finally quit paying Lucic this year.

Broberg and Holloway already hit their performance bonuses for making opening night roster, so there's another $1.5 million gone for next year. When Brown hits 10 games played, the Oilers will have $4.725 million against the cap next year.

I present to you all a glimpse of the Oilers future.

2024/2025 ($87,500,000 salary cap)
The Oilers will have $8,333,333 in cap space to try and fix this garbage lineup....

Kane - McDavid - Draisatl
Hyman - Nuge - ?
? - Macleod - ?
? - Ryan - ?
?

Nurse - Ceci
Ekholm - Bouchard
Kulak - ?
?

Campbell
Skinner

They need 8 players. They'll have an average of $1,041,065.63 per ? player to spend to the cap. If they only sign 7 (12 forwards 7 D) then they have $1,190,476.14 per ? player.

But it may get even better.

2025/2026 Oilers ($92,000,000 salary cap)
If Draisatl loses his mind and decides to re-sign with Edmonton, the following year they will have the same lineup as above minus Ceci, Bouchard, Mcleod and Ryan. Draisatl's new contract will take up any cap increase ($4.5 million) but they get $4.725 back from the dead cap in 24/25. But Bouchard is a RFA.

Kane - McDavid - Draisatl
Hyman - Nuge - ?
? - ? - ?
? - ? - ?
?

Nurse - ?
Ekholm - ?
Kulak - ?

Campbell
Skinner

So they will have approx. $13,083,033 in cap space to sign all the ?'s above. Or $1,189,393.91 per ? player. If Bouchard gets his same contract he has now, that leaves them with $9,183,333 for 10 players, less than a million per player.

So that's it. The end of a McEra. I would wager both Drai and McDavid are traded after this season, unless they let Drai walk for nothing then trade McD prior to his last year.

Thanks for reading.

Apparently Kane went on to do the weather forecast on Global. He looked right at home surrounded by a bunch of minuses.

I bet it was like -12 and magically "changed" to -7 during the commercial break.
