NGL, I can see how that would bother people.

Old one but hospital parking. I’m on track to spend well over $100 on parking because my son had the audacity to be born 6 ish weeks early. So dumb.

Agreed I really find it quite distasteful that hospitals price gouge on parking. Seems like unethical or something, preying on people are their most vulnerable / sensitive moments. Quite gross, actually. I get charging to cover op costs but not as a (obviously huge) profit center.

You can thank the PC's for that. AHS used to run it, and they did it with some humanity. Then it got sold of to for profit companies, and they treat us like any for profit company would, as a captive money dispenser.
But people vote for governments that do this stuff, and then complain when it bites them. Crazy thought, stop voting for them.

I dunno, I think the same is the case pretty much in any major city across Canada. I’m also not voting in this election, as I moved to Saskatchewan. I can tell you the hospitals in Saskatoon and Vancouver, for example do the same thing and have had different variations of provincial governments with different political leanings.

I don't know their situation, I do know ours. There was no good reason to allow a private corporation to take profits from those having to deal with medical issues. Not when the system worked fine before.

It's been years but my kids were too. Back then you could at least purchase a heavily discounted monthly pass rather than daily parking. Is that still a thing?
And regardless, keep the receipts as this is tax deductible too.

They don't. Hospitals take $0 from parking (unless they get a portion of revenues) as this service was outsourced years ago.

Nope. If you want a monthly pass you have to buy it up front. Don't know how long your loved one is needing care? Better take a gamble! What, you don't want to do the math in your head when all you want to do is get inside to catch the doctor on rounds? It's not unusual for 2 days to turn into a week then into a month. But you have to figure it out ahead of time. It should be criminal.
The old system was compassionate and understood how medical care works. But #### the people right? Someone is happy about it, and it's not the citizens.

You can buy monthly and weekly passes. But only from the parking office.. which isn’t open weekends.

Talk to someone in the nursing unit about an authorization form for a month long parking pass. Roughly 70 bucks. During the last years of my dads life he'd end up in hospital 3-4 times a year, minimum 2 weeks each time, and I just did that instead of doing the parking guessing game. Too late
Congrats on the kid and hope he get out and home soon.

Doesn't seem ethical, that's for sure. That's capitalism for you.

That's how the old system was if my recollection is right. That was at Foothills, maybe other locations were different.

Rockyview was the same at the time, as was the UofA hospital in Edmonton. They all to changed at different times, but it happened within a year or so.

It's not much of a gamble. If you park more than 5 days you've made it back. And you can show receipts and they can back date it.
Also you can add all hospitals to the pass, in case your loved one gets transferred. It's really a stress saver not having to calculate time of visit.

Parking is operated by AHS. Who are these "for profit" companies that run them?
https://www.albertahealthservices.ca...page12576.aspx
As far as I can remember, hospital parking has cost money, going waaay back to the 1980s.
I find this whole line of reasoning utterly bizarre. Should governments only buy MRI machines from non-profit companies? Or maybe they could design and build their own lol.

If it really is this simple then why isn’t this presented as an option?
Oh yeah…. Ignorance is profit in this case.
