If only that person would have picked up after their dog he might have wanted to stay.

A 2 year deal would be great.

4 years would even be fine for Backlund. Guy’s a stud.

With the exception of last season Backlund is a stud for half a season. The guy is going to be 35, his game is going to start regressing every year going forward. I really don't want to see anything over two years.

I could see Backs putting up 40-50 pts from the 3rd line, with his usual fine defensive contributions for another 3 years at least. Even if his offensive production decreases, he will be useful, IMO.

2 years sounds good. 3 years max. 4 years is unnecessary.

If Backlund puts up 50 points from the 3rd line we have no worries about this team

Longer term at a lower salary, or short term at a higher salary. I'd take either. He is aging really well and has been a leader on the team and in the community. Retaining him on a reasonable contract for a player his age would also be a PR win for the Flames, who have taken their fair share of PR hits lately. Having a player decide that he wants to be a lifer would help improve the image of the Flames as a team players move on from.

Well, I think it’s fair to say he did it this past year, amirite? He was technically playing behind Kadri and Lindholm at 5 on 5, usually with Coleman, and put up 56 points….

It's crazy that he posted 56 last season given everything that went on.
I'd be very comfortable with 2-3 years.

You keep repeating this "Half year off" narrative that just isn't true.
Sure some years his offensive production was better in the second half, but generally he's still strong analytically and defensively all season.

45 point players are all streaky. If they weren't they'd be 82 point scorers.
What isn't streaky is his overall game and play away from the puck. He's about as bankable as any player on the roster.

Not sure I agree, I have never been a big fan of Backlund but having Kadri has led to Backlund being the best 3rd line centre in the league.

I have a feeling if Backlund gets the C this year he will be like Gio and have his best ever season at 35.
