The 70s might be the best decade of American films, and the more I watch of 70s cinema the more I tend to agree. The 70s was really the decade that catered to adults and as a result we get these gritty films that are much different than the fun loving 80s. Don't get me wrong I love the 80s, but 70s is peak cinema.
Today's watch was the 70s classic Network, which is absolutely amazing, and so ahead of its time. It's honestly like whoever wrote the film went back in time after visiting the future, and saw what television would become, with trash TV of the 90s and beyond.
The basic premise is an aging news anchor is fired and during one of his last broadcasts he announces he will shoot himself live on the air for his last broadcast. Turns out to be a ratings hit and he is re-hired. There is so much more than that but as always I don't want to spoil anything. The dialogue in this is sharp and the acting so sublime, it's really a perfect film. While it deals with mature themes, it does so with witty dark humor throughout.

The 70s were indeed the best for film. I just rewatched The Last Picture Show. Cybill Shepherd takes your breath away from the first moment she shows up on screen.
The year has just begun but Argyle is firmly on my list for absolute worst movie of 2024. I can't imagine anything released in the next 11 months will compete.

A friend gave me the DVD of this movie. Loved the storyline. In 1951, a blacklisted Hollywood writer gets into a car accident, loses his memory and settles down in a small town where he is mistaken for a long-lost son.

Had to fire up Happy Gilmore yesterday in memory of Carl Weathers. Still one of the funniest movies ever it's absolutely hilarious. I wish Adam Sandler still did movies for an older audience.

Happy Gilmore is timeless. I could watch it over and over.
That fight with Bob Barker? Absolutely iconic!
And of course Carl Weathers was great in it!

It was truly awful. I wanted to walk out of the theatre during the last act. What a waste of a cast of talented actors. The premise seemed mildly interesting, but it was a huge letdown. An atrocious movie.

Aw crap. That one looked like it was going to be fun.
Not 'Great' but at least a fun time because Bryan Cranston and Sam Rockwell rarely let you down.

Absolutely atrocious, the more I think about it the more I hate it. I've enjoyed Vaughn's films and thought it was worth a shot even though I was leery, the script was nuclear dog####, I don't know how Sam Rockwell signed on for this. The CGI was borderline ridiculous and used to an extent that it was egregious.
Every twist and turn, of which there were many, was painful. At times it seemed like a spy movie parody made for soccer moms, I don't know how to sum up this garbage.

By the time they got to the ending scene with the skating on oil and fighting in the smoke, I honestly wondered if Vaughn purposely wanted to make a bad movie? The twists and turns were cringe inducing, and often made little sense. The soundtrack was also terrible, and it's obvious some people were there just to cash a cheque (Sam Jackson).
There was also some miscasting with Howard and Cena front and center. I thought Rockwell was decent, but they didn't give him much to work with. I saw 60-70 movies in theatres last year, and Argylle ranks with Expendables 4 and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey among the worst of what I saw. It honestly makes me question Vaughn's work as a director, as this was a huge misfire.
I feel bad for Henry Cavill as well, he deserves better. It's about time Hollywood gives him another proper starring role (again).
Freeway with Reese Witherspoon and Keifer Sutherland is a fantastic 90s gritty, insane reimagined version of Little Red Riding Hood. After Reese's Mother is arrested for prostitution, the character goes to live with her Grandma. Unfortunately after her car breaks down on the side of the highway she catches a ride with a serial killer who has been killing women in LA. There are a lot of great twists and turns in this one, it's a fun watch. I remember seeing this at my local video store as a kid but not being allowed to rent it so it's always piqued my interest.

The ####ing skating and smoke scenes, god damn it that was quite a #### sandwich. Those 2 sequences were offensively bad.
I'm right there with you on numbers, I hit the theater at least twice a month and sometimes 3 times. I didn't even hate Black Panther 2 this much. I have to go way back to Fast & Furious 7 which I despised.
Layer Cake and the Kingsmen must have been flukes because I now consider Vaughn a hack and won't change my mind unless he issues a public apology.
I love Sam Jackson but isn't he one of the highest grossing actors of all time when you add up the Marvel projects? Does he really need to do this? I love Catherine O'Hara, why did she have to be involved with this?
This movie makes me hate the editors, the writers, the DOP. It also looked terrible, I hope the company responsible for the CGI goes bankrupt.

When he smokes that lady and she falls out of the window? Kills me every time.

I want to thank the CP collective for your reviews of Argyll. My wife and I had a date night last night and had tickets to see it. After looking at Rotten Tomatoes and then the reviews here, we decided to cancel the show and stay home to watch Loudermilk instead. I think we came out on top.
Thanks for keeping me from wasting 2.5 hours on this. However, I do reserve the right to watch it on streaming later just so I an see how bad it was. I'm fascinated by bad movies.
