Agreed. Every woman with authority that I have ever met has had the most annoying voice/tone. Without fail they are shrill and uppity.

So Freeland asks in the video, “can capitalist democracies work” in todays age.
Wow. Holy ####, this should give EVERYONE a very, very, very long sobering pause.
Can you imagine if Pierre Poilievre asked that question? Unbelievable.
The fact she asks it reveals she does not believe it can. Otherwise, no need for the question. Whacky. Canada really has headed off the deep end. Lastly, is Canada even really “capitalist”? Answer: no.

Hahahahaha!!!
Has she even graduated from University? Because...read the room lady, this is not the time or place for a 'Doom and Gloom Global Reset Manifesto' reading.
Like...I loved when they panned the crowd...its all "Peace!" or "Yeah!! We Graduated!!" and "Who is this crazy person and what is she on about?"

I would have to hear the whole speech. But she does say that democracy is fighting in Bakmut against oppression, so she certainly strongly support’s democracy there. Again without hearing the whole thing she seems to be challenging grads to say what we’re doing right now isn’t sustainable and you are going to need to lead us through changes.
Doesn’t that represent the common theme of these speeches? If we also look at it, the world can’t live the way we have in North America. We consume way too much in proportion, and we over contribute to climate change. Yet we also have created free and open societies relatively so there’s a strong positive. However, the gap between those who have and those who have not is getting bigger, creating tension.
So in a sense I think a lot of people on both sides of the political spectrum sees a need for change moving forward, the question is what does it look like? Our political/economic structure is maybe like 100 years old, probably less, maybe even post world war 2 when this phase started. It’s not like it’s existed for thousands of years and will never change. I don’t think she was for even a moment suggestion democracy and capitalism will go away….but she certainly was questioning what it might look like moving forward.

Certainly well worth it for a bunch of posters to get their knickers in a knot when not even knowing what the whole speech was.

Yup exactly but unfortunately we know that clip will circulate widely, perhaps even be shortened more and become something to fill the meat grinder. All it takes is just a few minutes often of your own research to verify some of this.
Glad I read the whole thing now after my first response.

This all but guarantees that the poster upthread who was so pissed is going to avoid a mea culpa response.

Even without the full context, the idea that anyone thought Freeland would use a university convocation speech to announce the Liberals grand plan to out their plans for Bond villain style world domination to crush democracy is absolutely hilarious.
Is his what some people were expecting at the end of the clip?

But at the end of the day, shouldnt we consider whether this was really the most appropriate forum for this?
Its supposed to be a happy day for Grads and their families, a lot of hard work went into accomplishing this not to mention money.
"Thanks for graduating into this world of S###" is not really in the spirit of the moment.

Did you read it? She goes to tell tales of bravery and accomplishment in face of challenge and bridges to the optimism she has for the grad class to rise to the challenges of their generation. Pretty standard fair.
What do you want? Congrats for graduating don’t do anything with your degree, sit back and just take it easy, the world will take care of you speech?
